Week One

Here we are with our 42nd Season of Golden Goals and a very warm welcome to you all, and what a season we are going to have once again.

As you can see that we have ended up with a total of 114 entries in this season’s competition and I would like to thank everyone who has helped us to get to that magic figure, which just managed to get into the top ten best seasons of Golden Goals once again. It is with great regret that we did not reach our record total of 149 from the 2017/18 Season. Although we have some names missing from last season, we have gained another 7 new ones and a couple of old ones. So who is going to be our 42nd Champion and win the £100 prize money? We shall find out in the next 42 weeks but I wish you all the very best of luck.

You will see from the above table that we have a total of 16 past Champions playing this season including 3, two time winners. Our last season joint Champions are also back, and they were John Filtness and Andrew Hammond. John has changed his winning combination from last season, but Andrew has kept the same teams with Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City. We also have a total of 20 ladies playing in this season’s competition.

So how did the voting of teams for this season finally end up with. It was MANCHESTER CITY that picked up the biggest number of votes once again with a total of 46. Last season they had a total of 44 votes and scored a total of 112 goals, so this was no surprise that they would be the most voted team again this season. With our Scottish teams, CELTIC after picking up 39 votes last season, they picked up more votes this season with 40

Staying with the Scottish teams, the second highest voted team comes from the Scottish Premiership again, and they are RANGERS with just 14 votes which is down from last seasons total of 15. The Scottish teams had a good turnout this season with a total of 12 teams once more being picked. We have just 6 teams from the Scottish Premiership, 1 from the Championship, 2 from League One and 3 from League Two.

With the English teams things have changed as they always do in this competition. We have a total of 14 Premiership teams once again in this years competition with MANCHESTER CITY our top team again this season.  Next comes ARSENAL with 45 votes. They were also our 2nd most voted team last season with 37 votes. In third place with 27 votes, we have LIVERPOOL. They were again our 3rd most voted team last season with 29 votes. In fourth place, up from 10 last season is LEEDS UNITED. They have 25 votes compared to 9 last season. Our fifth voted team is PETERBOROUGH UNITED with 14 votes. They had a total of just 6 votes last season in 14th place. In the Championship we have picked up 11 teams compared to 12 last season, while in League One we have 8, and 6 teams taken from League Two.

We have the one team that came back into the football league this season. They are CHESTERFIELD with new comers in to the professional league, BROMLEY.

So on with the competition and this weeks sheet shows you all the games that have been played up to and including the 11th August. Any games that have been played before and up to Friday the 9th August have all been counted as midweek goals, so some of you have a bit of a lead already for the Midweek Cash Jackpot of £25

In the opening games of the season we had the first round of the Scottish League Cup where we had eight of our 12 teams in action. Plus, the first games of their leagues.

Our first English league games played last Friday night where in the Championship, SHEFFIELD UNITED won their first league game 2-0 away to PRESTON NE.

In League One BARNSLEY lost their first league game 2-1 at home to Mansfield Town.

In League Two CHESTERFIELD drew their first comeback game 1-1 at home against Swindon Town.

Week One we had our very first winner of the new season who won on a total of 7 goals to win the first £5 weekend prize money. Our winner is our joint 2007/08 Champion RICKY WOOD.

Ricky started with Golden Goals in our 23rd Season of 2005/06. In that season he finished in the winning frame in 20th place with 262 goals and picked up a shared weekend win. Ricky became joint Champion in 2007/08 Season with a total of 293 goals which is our 33rd best end of season score. He won just over £150 including a shared weekend win. Last season he finished in 30th place with a total of 304 goals. So it’s a good start for Ricky and his team’s this season are..

                                                BOLTON 2, CELTIC 2, LEEDS UNITED 3
