The host nation Russia in Group A, have started their World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia
in the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. It was not the best opening game but the
goals came flying in for the Russians as they win 5-0 and they have record the biggest win by the host nation in the opening
game of a World Cup since 1934.
In the first half both teams
seemed to be very unsettled and it was mainly the Saudi’s that made the best
moves in the first ten minutes of play. The Russians scored their first goal
after 12 minutes of play by Gazinsky with a header. The goal did not unease the
Saudis but both teams kept giving away the ball and attacks were quickly broken
down by both teams. The second Russian goal came just before half time.
In the second half the
Russians came out the best but still moves from both sides seem to fizzle out
very quickly. The third Russian goal came
in the 71st minute and was scored by one of many substitutes made by
both teams, Dzyuba with another header. Still the Saudis tried to get back into
this game but the other two goals came in the three minutes of added time and
these were the best goals scored in the game. The fourth goal was scored from a
great long shot by Cherysheu his second of the game and the last goal came from
a free-kick just outside of the box and was perfectly scored by Golovin as the
shot went around the Saudis wall and into the top corner of their net.
Russia are top of their group
for now but they will need to get their act together for the other games to win
their group. It was a better performance from the host nation in the second half
but could they beat a better team? Russia have just four votes in our Golden
Goals World Cup but what a great start for them.
Today we have four of our
teams in action they are in Group A EGYPT v URUGUAY and
in Group B PORTUGAL v SPAIN.
