If you do not have a red code by your name, then I am sorry to say that you are out of the competition. Again just to re-cap on our rules, that extra time goals DO count, but penalty shoot out’s DON’T!

FRANCE (13) ENGLAND (13) ARGENTINA (12) PORTUGAL (12) Total of 50 goals

In the last Golden Goals World Cup 2018 we reached a total of 107 goals after the semi-finals, In Qatar our teams have scored a total of 5 goals after the quarter-final games and a total of 124 goals over the tournament to date. 

SPAIN holds the current record for the highest score with that 7-0 win over Costa Rica in Group E in their opening game.

Our worst teams finished with BELGIUM, DENMARK, TUNISIA and WALES as they have all scored just 1 goal in their three games in the first round.

Canada's Alphonso Davies has scored the fastest goal in Group F against Croatia, when they lost 4-1 in their second game in the first round. It took him just 68 seconds.

Top goal scores in Qatar 2022 are in the lead we have Kylian Mbappe from France and Lionel Messi from Argentina both with 5 goals each. In second place we have and Olivier Giroud of France and Julián Álvarez from Argentina with 4 goals each. We then have 7 players with 3 goals each.

We had six players that picked up the highest score over the semi-finals with 5 goals each. All six have Argentina and France as part of their combination.

Danny Harrington has remained at the top after all of the games in the semi-finals have been played. His teams are Argentina, Brazil, England and Portugal.

So we can now confirm that in the 3rd and 4th play-offs to be played this Saturday

between CROATIA v Morocco and in the Final on Sunday it’s ARGENTINA v FRANCE.     

France to Play Argentina in Final

 

In the second game of the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar, FRANCE played Morocco. France had beaten England in their quarter-final game while Morocco got that surprise win over Portugal.

The first half started off very well and it was like watching the final itself.  It was not long before the world champions scored the first goal in the 5^th minute by Hernandez. Both sides were missing chances, but it was France that controlled the first 30 minutes and they should of scored again as Morocco came back time after time and had most of the last 15 minutes in where they hit the post. The second half was just the same with Morocco doing most of the work this time, but France after a great build-up scored their second in the 79^th minute through Kolo Muani. Morocco never gave up and had great-spirit, perhaps a team to think about in the next World Cup? Even in injury time they had a shot kicked off the French goal line. Final result is 2-0 to France which takes their goals total to 13 goals.  This will be the third consecutive final that France have been in. They will be playing Argentina in the final on Sunday and what a game that will be. Morocco will play Croatia in the 3^rd/4^th play-offs on Saturday.

 

Argentina In Final

 

In the first game of the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar, ARGENTINA played CROATIA. Both teams had to go to penalties in their quarter-final games.

The game started with both teams on equal terms with their attacks and defence until the Croatian goalkeeper Livakovic takes out Alvarez in the penalty area and the ref gives a penalty. Messi is the man for the job and in it goes in the 34^th minute. That is Messi’s 5^th goal of the tournament. It was not long after that Argentina scored their second in the 39^th minute by Alvarez. Argentina nearly had a third but what a fantastic save by Croatia’s goalkeeper Livakovic. Argentina lead at half time 2-0 and they have now scored in all of their seven games. Argentina was very much in control in the second half as Croatia struggled to get any decent moves going. In the 69^th minute Alvarez scored his second goal and it’s all going wrong for Croatia. Argentina made some substitutions in the second half but they could not extend their score line. Croatia played well in the last few minutes before full time. Argentina won 3-0 with their biggest result of the tournament and they are in the final. They are now on a total of 12 goals. It’s not yet over for Croatia as they will play in the 3^rd/4^th play-offs on Saturday.

Much Needed Win for West Brom

In the Championship it’s 30 goals for SUNDERLAND as they lose 2-1 at home to WEST BROM. West Brom are on a total of 27 goals and it's their 6th league win of the season. They have now won four out of their last five games.

Week Twenty

Here we are with Week Twenty of the competition and it’s half time here at Golden Goals. The good news is that the English Championship is back in action this week and next weekend, the Scottish Premiership will be back. So once again there is no cash prize money to win this weekend. We did have three players that picked up the most number of goals this weekend and they are JAMES BLYTH, NICK HORTON and KEITH THOMSON. All three picked up a total of 3 goals each. Their teams are for  James with Ipswich, Manchester City and Sheffield Wednesday. Nick has Manchester City, Middlesbrough and Norwich. Keith has Burnley, Liverpool and Rangers. 

100 MIDWEEK GOALS JACKPOT 

Only eight of us managed to pick up some midweek goals this week with the odd goal. Just a small change in the leading pack this week we still have NICK HORTON out in front with a total of 39 goals. His teams are Manchester City, Middlesbrough and Norwich. In second place we have HAYLEY ADKINS with a total of 38 goals. In third place we still have JAMES BLYTH  and RICK WOOD our 2007/08 Champion but they are now joined with JACQUI RATTLE up from four. All have a total of 35 goals each. In fourth place with a total of 32 goals we now have MARK GREGORY moving up from five. In fifth place all on 31 goals we now have STEVE AYRES, GEOFF CARTHY, PETER PORTER and TERENCE WARWICK all moving up from sixth place. 

WEEKEND RESULTS

This wekend we had the snow and ice effecting the football this weekend and I supose it will continue into the week as well. We had twenty-four of our teams in action this weekend but we had nine teams that failed to score any goals. The highest score that we had was 3 goals and they came from the English Championship where BURNLEY won 3-0 away to QPR. Burnley are back in action and they are now on a total of 47 goals. They have now scored in all of their last 21 games. 

Burnley became our 75^th team to play in Golden Goals back in the 1989/90 Season. In their first season they finished with a total of 61 goals. Their highest score came in the 2002/03 Season with 84 goals. Last time out for Burnley was in the 2015/16 Season with 75 goals. This is their 13^th season with us and over the years they have scored a total of 900 goals which gives them an average score of 69 goals per season. They have just one vote this season. 

CHAMPIONSHIP

Burnley are top here after their win against QPR. SHEFFIELD UNITED are in second place after they won 1-0 to bottom of the table HUDDERSFIELD. United are on a total of 36 goals while Huddersfield picked up their 9^th blank and now two in a row. READING won 1-0 at home to Coventry and they are on a total of 25 goals. MIDDLESBROUGH won 2-1 at home to LUTON and they are on a total of 31 goals and a goal run of six games. Luton picked up goal number 26. SWANSEA CITY lost 1-0 at home to NORWICH CITY and that is their 7^th blank score sheet and now two in a row. Norwich are on a total of 34 goals. WATFORD drew 0-0 at home to Hull and that is their 7^th blank of the season and now two in a row.

LEAGUE ONE

IPSWICH have moved to the top this weekend after they won 2-1 at home to PETERBOROUGH and are on a total of 48 goals. Borough are on a total of 42 goals. PLYMOUTH are down to second place as they drew 0-0 away to Cambridge Utd to pick up their 3^rd blank of the season and now two games in a row. SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY are still in third place after they drew 1-1 away to Exeter. Wednesday are on a total of 46 goals. DERBY drew 1-1 away to Burton and they are on a total of 36 goals. FOREST GREEN ROVERS are on 25 goals as they win 1-0 at home to Cheltenham. BRISTOL ROVERS won 1-0 at home to Port Vale and they are on a total of 33 goals. LINCOLN CITY picked up their 9^th blank score sheet after they drew 0-0 at home to Wycombe. Lincoln have now failed to score in their last two games. MK DONS lost 2-1 at home to Fleetwood and they are on a total of 32 goals. They have now scored in all of their last seven games. 

LEAGUE TWO

This is where the weather hit us most with only a couple of games being played. The highest team that we have here in the table are MANSFIELD TOWN in 5^th place. They drew 0-0 away to Stevenage to pick up their 6^th blank of the season. SUTTON UTD won 1-0 at home to Colchester. Sutton are on a total of 19 goals. SWINDON drew 0-0 at home to AFC WIMBLEDON.  Swindon picked up their 9^th blank of the season and now three games in a row. Wimbledon also picked up their 9^th.

SCOTTISH LEAGUE RESULTS

In League Two STENHOUSEMUIR lost 2-1 at home to Forfar and they are now on a total of 41 goals and a goal run of sixteen games. BONNYRIGG ROSE drew 0-0 away to East Fife and that is their 4^th blank of the season after a goal run of ten games.

Our best performing team are BURNLEY as they have now scored in all of their last 21 league/cup games played. They have a total of 47 goals. That gives them an average score of 1.9 goals per game.

Our worst performing team is GILLINGHAM this weekend as they have picked up fifteen blank score sheets out of 27 League/Cup games played. 

Our highest goal scorers in our 40^th Season are CELTIC who won 9-0 away to Dundee Utd in the league and LIVERPOOL who won 9-0 at home to Bournemouth in the league both from Week Five.

Our 2010/11 Champion TONY GUY with his second selection, has remained at number one spot for his 7^th weekend running. Tony picked up one goal this week from Sheffield Wednesday. His other teams are  Arsenal and Celtic. James Blyth has moved up to second place this weekend. James picked up 3 goals from his combination of Ipswich, Manchester City and Sheffield Wednesday.  

At the other end at 108 we have SANDRA NICHOLLS as all of her teams are out of action. Sandra has now been here for five weeks and now eight over the season. Sandra’s teams are Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Leicester City.

France Play Morocco in Semi-Final

Morocco after winning their group and beating Belgium and Canada to get to the quarter-finals they had to play PORTUGAL. Portugal was also top of their group winning against Ghana and Uruguay but this would be no easy game for them. Morocco dominated the first half and they scored just before half time in the 42^nd minute by En-Nesyri. In the second half Portugal brought on their sub Ronaldo but he made no difference to the outcome. Even when Morocco were reduced to ten men they stood their ground and defended well in the last dying minutes. Morocco win 1-0 and yet another shock in this World Cup. Morocco make history for getting to the semi-finals.

Portugal are in their 6^th World Cup with Golden Goals and this is the best score that they have had with a total of 12 goals. In Russia 2018 they finished on a total of 6 goals. Portugal’s average score at a World Cup is 7 goals. 

ENGLAND after winning their group, had beaten Iran and Wales in the first round and then won against Senegal in the second round. FRANCE had also won their group against Australia and Denmark. In the second round they pushed past Poland to get here.  England had a good first half with the game moving up and down the field with both teams having their periods of control. But the French scored the first goal in the 17^th minute by Tchouameni. Half time and France are 1-0 up. The second half started really fast and England received a penalty in the 54^th minute and it was scored by Harry Kane. Despite England hitting the post, the French scored their second goal in the 78^th minute from Giroud. England got another penalty in the 82^nd minute but Harry Kane blast it way over the bar. I thought that England had played very well but the game goes to the France with a final score of 2-1. France have taken their goals total to 11.  

England are in their 8^th World Cup with us and they finished with a total of 13 goals which is their best score in a World Cup. They have also scored the most goals in Qatar so far. They now average around 7 goals in each World Cup. 

After the quarter-final games have now all been played and we have just 3 nations left in the World Cup. We have now taken our goals total to 119. At this stage in Russia 2018 we had a total of 105 goals from 18 teams.
