The Very Last Games of 2014

We have now seen the very last football of 2014 played and the results are very disappointing for us here at Golden Goals. We had seven of our teams in action and out of them only three found their opponents net.
The highest score to date came from the English Premiership where LIVERPOOL played Swansea at home and won 4-1. This is their highest score of the season and they are now on a total of 33 goals.

Meanwhile in the Championship, FULHAM lost 2-0 at home to Brighton to pick up their 8th blank score sheet of the season and now they have failed to score in their last two games. DERBY leaves 2014 on a total of 57 goals as they win 2-0 at home against LEEDS UTD. Leeds picked up blank number seven and now two games in a row. CHARLTON lost 3-0 away to Ipswich and they picked up their 7th blank score sheet and WIGAN picked up their 9th as they go down 1-0 at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

In League One, LEYTON ORIENT won 3-0 away to Yeovil and that now gives them a total of 36 goals. They have now scored seven goals in their last two games.

So this is the very last posting for 2014 from Golden Goals, so I would like to wish you all, where ever you are in the world a very Happy New Year.

Week Twenty-one and the start of the second half of the season

So the whistle has been blown for the start of the second half of this our 32nd Season of Golden Goals. But it has not been a very good start to this half as the average score fell from five to just 2 goals each. Eighteen of us failed to pick up any goals and this was due to eleven teams that had no game or it was cancelled due to the bad weather and another ten teams that failed to score any goals and some were our highest voted teams.
Our highest score this weekend came from WATFORD as they win 4-2 away to CARDIFF. Watford are now on a total of 45 goals while Cardiff are on 37.
Although Watford have a total of three votes this season, they are one of our original teams from the very first season back in 1983/84. This is Watford's 19th season with Golden Goals and they have done well over the seasons. Their highest score came in the second season when they finished on a total of 102 goals. The three that have picked Watford as part of their combination will be pleased that this will not be ending on their lowest score as back in our 2006/07 Season they finished on just 41 goals. Last season they finished on a total of 86 goals. They have now scored a total of 1,343 goals to date which gives them an average of 70 goals per season.

PREMIERSHIP
Top of the table CHELSEA could only draw against Southampton away 1-1. That was Chelsea’s 48th goal of the season and they have scored in all of their last seven games. MANCHESTER CITY are still second and three points behind Chelsea as they drew 2-2 at home to Burnley. City are on 48 goals. MANCHESTER UNITED remained in third place as they drew 0-0 away to TOTTENHAM. That was United’s 4th blank score sheet and Tottenham’s 5th. ARSENAL are on 35 goals as they beat London Rivals 2-1 away to West Ham. on 28. QPR drew 0-0 at home to CRYSTAL PALACE to pick up their 8th blank score sheet and palace their 7th. CELTIC picked up their 3rd blank of the season as they drew 0-0 at home to Ross County. RANGERS also picked up their 3rd as they lost with their biggest defeat of the season 4-0 away to Hibs. Meanwhile STENHOUSEMUIR are on 27 goals as they win 2-0 away to Stranraer. After their win in midweek, HEARTS win again 1-0 away to Livingston. Hearts are on 48 goals.

We are still following Manchester City record breaking end of season score of 137 goals from last season, In Week twenty-one last season, City scored two goals in midweek and one goal at the weekend. Their goals tally has now risen to 64 goals after twenty-two games played. They have still had two blank score sheet’s and their highest score was seven goals against Norwich in the league.
This season they picked up three goals in midweek and at the weekend they picked up two. So City are now on a total of 48 goals this weekend. They have still had two blank score sheet after twenty-one games played. They are now 16 goals behind last seasons record run. They are at home to Southampton on New Years Eve.

Midweek Domestic Cup Rounds

We had nine of our teams in cup action in midweek in two of our domestic English cup rounds this week. First with the Capital One Cup quarter-finals where we had five of them playing and out of them four went through to the semi-finals. This is where the highest score came where TOTTENHAM beat Newcastle 4-0 at home. That took Tottenham’s goals tally to 29. Also CHELSEA won 3-1 away to DERBY and they are now on 43 while Derby picked up goal number 49. SHEFFIELD UNITED are also through with a 1-0 home win against Southampton to give them a goals total of 38. LIVERPOOL won 3-1 away to Bournemouth and are now on 26 goals.

In the FA CUP Second Round Replays we had four teams playing in this one but two have made it through to the next round. BARNSLEY are through to round three and now on 38 goals as they win 3-0 away to Chester. LUTON won 1-0 at home to BURY and that was their 30th goal and Burys 6th blank of the season. SCUNTHORPE are also through although they drew 1-1 after extra time but then went on to win 14-13 on penalties against non-league team Worcester away. Scunthorpe are now on 30 goals.

Just one league result and that was EVERTON winning 3-1 at home to Q.P.R. Everton are now on 27 goals while Rangers picked up goal number 17.

100 MIDWEEK GOALS JACKPOT
This is the part of the competition where goals are scored from midweek i.e Monday to Friday are counted up and the first person to 100 midweek goals receives a nice cash prize.

Just over half of us managed to pick up some more midweek goals with the highest coming from DOUG MORBEY with a total of 10 goals. They came from Chelsea and Liverpool three goals each and Tottenham with four. Doug is now on 33 midweek goals this week. So we have a little bit of a change for the cash this week.
TONY KING is still out in front this week on a total of  60 goals after picking up a goal from Derby. SCOTT THOMSON (1) remained  in second place with a new total of 53 goals. In third place on 52 goals we have ALEX DAVEY who moves down one.  In fourth place down from three we have JAMES SOMERVILLE and up from sixth place CRIAG EVANS both on 49 goals. In fifth place we have TOBY BICKNELL and PHIL REEVE both down from four with PAUL DAVEY down from three. Also up from sixth place we have  CHRIS NUNN all on a total of 48 goals.  In sixth place both on 48 goals we have NICK GATES down from fifth place and BRIAN WAKEFIELD down from four.

Week Nineteen

There were some midweek games which I have not posted the results on this blog so here they are. We had just three of our teams in midweek action this week but one of them failed to pick up any goals. That team was RANGERS as they went down 2-0 away to Queen of the South. That was Rangers second blank score sheet in their last four games. MANCHESTER UNITED won 2-1 away to Southampton.
In the WILLIAM HILL SCOTTISH CUP 4th Round, DUNFERMLINE are out of the cup as they lose 3-2 at home to Stranraer.

As we are near half time with this season already the weekends average score moved back up to 5 goals which is much better. The reason for this is that we had some very good results although seven of our teams failed to net any goals and another four teams that had no game this weekend.
Our highest score this weekend came from NORWICH as they win 5-0 at home to Huddersfield. This is Norwich’s highest score of their season and they are now on a total of 38 goals.
Norwich never have been a high voted team as they only have one vote this season. Norwich have been with Golden Goals for thirteen seasons now and they started with us in our second season in 1984/85. Their highest score was in 2009/10 where they finished on 102 goals. Last time out in the following season they finished on 88 goals which is still very good. Over the thirteen seasons they have netted a total of 873 goals to date which gives them an average of  67 goals per season.

PREMIERSHIP
CHELSEA are still top after they beat Hull 2-0 at home. Chelsea are on a total of 40 goals this weekend and three points clear of MANCHESTER CITY.
