WeeK One

Well here we are with our 38th Season of Golden Goals and a very big welcome to you all and what a strange season we are going to have once again. This season was on hold for so long that I was not going to run this season’s competition. The coronavirus is still with us and this season could stop as soon as it starts but many thanks for being here with us. As you can see that we have ended up with a total of 116 entries in this seasons competition and I would like to thank everyone who has  helped us to get to that magic figure which becomes our sixth best Golden Goals season. It is with regret that we did not reach our previous record of 149 from the 2017/18 Season but I knew that we would not hit that this season. Although we have seen some names missing from last season, we have gained another eleven new ones. So who is going to be our 38th Champion? We will find out in the next forty weeks. but I wish you all the very best of luck.

You will see from the above table that we have a total of sixteen past Champions playing this season which is a record for us including one of our double winners Phil Reeve. Our last season’s Champion is also back and that was Bradley Clark. Bradley has not changed his winning combination from last season and they are once again Celtic, Liverpool and Manchester City.  We also have a total of twenty-one ladies playing this season.

So how did the voting of teams for this season finally end up. It was MANCHESTER CITY that picked up the biggest number of votes as they came in with a total of 71. Last season they had a total of 73 and scored a total of 127 goals so there was no surprise that they would be the most voted teams this season once again. CELTIC after picking up just 49 votes last season, this season they are up to 56 votes.

Staying with the Scottish teams the second highest voted team comes from the Scottish Premiership again and they are RANGERS with just 15 votes which is right down from last seasons 35. The Scottish teams had another small turn out with just eight teams once again. We have four from the Scottish Premiership, one from the Championship and two from League One and just one from League Two.

With the English teams things have changed as they always do in this competition. We have a total of  15  Premiership teams in this years competition with MANCHESTER CITY becoming our top team again this season.  Next came LIVERPOOL with 30 votes. In third place with 21 votes is CHELSEA who only picked up five votes last season. In fourth place with 18 votes is Championship BRENTFORD who only picked up four votes last season. Our fifth team is PETERBOROUGH with 13 votes. They were our fourteenth most voted team last season with just 4 votes.

In the Championship we have picked up 16 teams compared to 17 last season,  while in League One we have 12 with 9 teams taken from League Two.

We have one new team to join Golden Goals this season. They are  HARROGATE TOWN in the English League Two and they have just one vote.

Week One in our very first weekend of the new season, here is where you are after just the Scottish Premierships six games and the first round of the EFL Cup. Next weekend we have a full league fixture and our very first weekend to pay out our first £6 weekend prize money for our 38th season.

Out of our 60 teams that have been picked this season, half  had no game and another eleven teams failed to score any goals in their first game of the season.

The highest score at the weekend came from the EFL CUP where we had a total of five teams that picked up three goals each. So lets have a quick run down on this weekends results.
