The fixtures are out

The good news today is that the fixtures are now out for next season. Our top teams from last season Celtic, they are home to Ross County while Rangers promoted to the second division are at home to Brechin. With our English clubs, Chelsea will be home to Hull while Man UTD are away to Swansea. Man City will take on Newcastle at home while Arsenal take on Aston Villa also at home. The two new teams back into League two is Mansfield Town and Newport County.
Mansfield Town was relegated to the Conference after the 2007/08 Season. They have only been in three seasons with Golden Goals. They were first in our third season of 1986/87 where they finished on a total of 55 goals. The next time that we saw them was in our 1995/96 Season when they ended with their best score of 59 goals. The last time that they played in Golden Goals was back in our 2004/05 Season where they finished on a total of 58 goals.
Newport County have been in in only one season with Golden Goals and that was in our very first season of 1983/84. Newport finished on a total of 68 goals before they were relegated out of the football league. So after a gap of 25 years, they are back and we hope that they will be back on our news sheets too.
The English Prem kick off on the 17th August while the lower leagues on the 3rd August. In Scotland the Scots Prem will start on the 3rd August while the lower leagues start on the 10th August.

Season 31 is on it's way

I started on the new entry forms last week, for the coming season and I am just waiting now for the start date for the football fixtures of 2013/14.
Do not send me your teams just yet, until the forms are out. So if you have already picked your combination, then keep them under your hat till then.
So we all know that Sir Alex Ferguson has retired after 26 years at Manchester United at the end of last season. Manchester United have been a big part of Golden Goals as they are just one of four teams that have appeared in all of our thirty seasons, to date. But what will happen now that David Moyes takes up the challenge from Everton, will the voting for United change from now on? Well only time will tell on that, and let’s hope that he can continue the success as Sir Alex Ferguson had. United have only hit 100 goals by the end of the season four times in 30 years. Last season they picked up 103.
Chelsea has Jose Mourinho back as manager. Jose was manager from 2004-2007 and in that time he won the FA Cup once, League cup twice and the Premiership title twice. So things could be looking good for Chelsea? Well Chelsea have hit 100 goals only twice and both in the last four years. They first picked up 128 goals at the end of the 2009/10 season, which is our second highest score after Peterborough’s high score of 129 goals in the following season of 2010/11. Last season they picked up a total of 108. They have also been with Golden Goals for 30 years.
Although we have named two great mangers of our times, winning all that silver wear and titles does not mean that they will pick up many goals by the end of the season as our competition history has shown.

The 30th Season is now over!

Well the final news sheet for this season has now been given out to all that played in our 30th Season of Golden Goals.
Congratulations again to Alice Stubbs on winning this season and we hope that she will be back to defend her title? Although Alice had the winning combination of Chelsea, Man UTD and Rangers,
What happened to the most wanted combination of last season?
The most popular combination was for Celtic, Man City and Sheff UTD and the person who got that one in first was Richard Briggs. With high hopes for Sheffield United to score loads of goals last season but what a disappointment they were. In the 2011/12 Season they picked up a total score of 104 goals, which is their highest score ever in the thirteen seasons that they have taken part in Golden Goals. In the end they picked up just 64 goals which is their second worst score in our competition. They only just beat their worst score of 63 goals scored back in our 1995/96 season. His other two teams, Celtic became our best team for the season and so for him with 117 goals. Man City had a good season for goals with 83, although they picked up 105 back in the Season before.
So how did the combination perform for Richard well, in the first five weeks of football, Richard just managed to stay in the top 50 but did get as high as 35th place in week four. From then on although he fell to 73rd place which was his lowest, he remained in the 50’s most of the back end of the season. Richard picked up just two blank weekend score sheets which was very low for this season.

I would like to also mention Bob Soper who started off the season in 91st place right at the bottom of the table, but over the following weeks, climbed right up to second place where he finished. Bob had Arsenal, Celtic and Man UTD.
But for all who took part in another season of Golden Goals, many thanks and here’s to next season!
