7 Days To Go

We have just seven days before we launch Season 34 with Golden Goals.  The Competition first started way back in 1983 and has built up a regular fan base of around 80 people per season but we would like more, much more..

It’s not an easy task to pick three teams that could make you our 34th champion but that’s how football goes. As always it’s first come, first served so it’s important to get your teams in as quick as you can. The entry forms will be available from Monday 4^th July 2016.

A New Season For Golden Goals

SEASON 34

So what is Golden Goals?

Well the competition has been now running for 34 years and little by little Golden Goals is getting more and more popular. 

The competition is based on each player (including you) picking out three teams from any of the English or Scottish leagues or a combination of..

These three teams you hope will pick you up a grand total of 300 goals which could make you our winner and our 34^th Champion. We are hoping that this season’s Champion will be picking up another £100

.

The entry fee will remain at £8 per entry as you can enter as many times as you want.

The launch of season 34 will start with the new entry forms being sent on Monday 4^th July.

What No Euros?

Sorry to say No, Golden Goals will not be doing the Euros 2016. The reason for that is very simple in that there are only 24 teams taking part and that would not give us many combinations to choose from.

I hope, like the World Cup, that they might add more countries into the competition in the future, so until they do, we will not be adding the Euros to our list of competitions.

Last Update of the Season

The final whistle has been blown on our historic 33^rd   Season of Golden Goals and it was not a great season for goals. But it was the season that we managed to beat our highest ever record of entries with 119. The success of the season was all down to you. The good news is that we do not have to wait long for the next season to start. Although we once again lost a few friends this season, we have also gained a lot of new ones. Lets hope that we can continue with this nice run as we have had a lot of success over our full 33 year history of Golden Goals.

This season we have had a couple of  records that have been broken this season, but more on this later. I hope that you have had a lot of fun watching your name go up and down the table and as shown above, where your combination of teams have left you standing in the final position of the season. But before we go all into that, lets take a look at what happened to the last few games of the season.

 So it’s Congratulations to RICHARD WILLIAMS as he now becomes our 33^rd Champion with Golden Goals and takes the prize money of a grand total of £100 in winnings. We can now add  Richard’s name in our history book and in the Champions League where he finished in 23^rd  place on 298 goals. Richard had the combination of  HIBERNIAN (88) MANCHESTER CITY (97) and RANGERS (113). Just two of his teams finished in our top best three teams and they were Manchester City and Rangers. Richard picked up  just three blank score sheet throughout the season and his highest score was 12 goals in weeks 9. Richard had a total of 20 week’s at number one with six of them all in the last six weeks of the season. In the end he finished five goals clear of  Simon Dickinson who finally finished in second place. 

ROAD TO CHAMPION 
So our new Champion’s name, RICHARD WILLIAMS is now in our history book, but what about the other people who managed to get to that magic number one spot.We had a total of ten people that made it to that number one slot. We already know about Richard’s 20 week’s at the top who stayed there the longest. After our Champion, we then had our 2001/02 Champion LAURIE KING with 7 weeks from week 17 to 23 while DANIEL GOODSON was their for 6 weeks from week 8 to 13. STEVEN CADWELL was their for 3 weeks from week 4 to 6 with six players that had a single week each. They were MICK LIDDLE in our 1^st week, MARK HOWARD in week 2, GEOFFREY PAIN in week 3, TONY KING in week 7, SIMON DICKINSON in week 28 and BOB SOPER in week 37. 

So what happened to our past Champions. Well we only had a total of thirteen that played in this seasons competition and only one of them finished in the top thirty and they were LAURIE KING our 2001/02 Champion in 6^th place. We had another three Champions that finished in the top fifty. In 37^th Place was DAVE SOMERVILLE our 2009/10 Champion and TONY GUY our 2010/11 Champion in 42^nd place with ALICE STUBBS our 2012/13 Champion in 46^th place . Below is the list of our top five champions of  Golden Goals.

At the other end of the table, we had just three players that landed on that rotten number of 119. GRAEME BRITTON holds the record for the best of our losers league with 214 goals from our 2004/05 season. The person who finished rock bottom this season was STEPTOE & SON with a total of 13 weeks throughout the season. First they were there from weeks 25 to 33 and then again from weeks 39 to 42. They picked up a total of six blank score sheets over the season. They had the combination of QUEENS PARK (55) QUEENS PARK RANGERS (58) and QUEEN OF THE SOUTH (51) total of 164 goals. Steptoe & Son combination finished in 29^th place in our losers league and they now add’s their name in the history book.

Although Steptoe & Son finished rock bottom, it was JOHN NICHOLLS that stayed there the longest with a total of 28 weeks. From week 2 to 24 and 34 to 38. With just the one week, which was our first weekend of football we had COLIN WEBB.

100 MIDWEEK GOALS JACKPOT 

The Prize Money for the 100 Midweek Goals Jackpot of £40 was not won this season and will then be added to next seasons jackpot. The nearest player to get their was DANIEL GOODSON on 96 goals who had Manchester City, Middlesbrough and Rangers.

PAUL DAVEY holds the record by picking up the highest midweek score in our 33 year history with 132 goals from the 2013/14 season.

BEAT THE SCORE 

The fantastic sum of  £55 cash prize money for BEAT THE SCORE has not been picked up once again this season. The prize money will go to the first person who scores 19 goals or more at the weekend. So I hope that next season we can add again to that. The holder of this record is Mark Rymer with 18 goals scored way back in our 1998/99 season, so it’s about time that some-one beat that score?

THE BEST THREE TEAMS FINISHED AS

RANGERS (113) CELTIC (108) MANCHESTER CITY (97) Total of  318 goals.

We had just two teams this season that picked up 100 or more goals. They are our best team RANGERS with that fantastic score of 113 goals. This is their 32^nd season with Golden Goals and this is their 14^th season with 100 or more goals scored by the end of the season. The good news here is that they have beaten last seasons score of 87 goals. Rangers have scored a total of 3137 goals which gives them an average total of 98 goals per season. Rangers had a total of 21 votes. It was also their 14^th season out of thirty-three for our second best team CELTIC. They finished with a total of 108 goals and failed to beat their best score of 122 goals scored back in our 2000/01 Season. Celtic have a 100% record with us and the good news is that this is their 6^th consecutive season with 100 or more goals. Over the 33 seasons, they have scored a total of 3169 goals which now gives them an average score of 99 goals per season. Last season they scored 110 goals. They had a total of 64 votes this season. The third best team was MANCHESTER CITY and they just beat last seasons score of 92 with 97 goals. They have scored a total of 1732 goals over the 22 seasons that they have appeared with Golden Goals. This gives them an average score of 78 goals per season. The 52 votes they had this season, were all looking towards them beating that record score of 137 goals back two seasons ago in the 2014/15 Season.

So lets see what happened to our other teams to see if they have broken any records this time round. Our fourth best team was PETERBOROUGH who ended the season with a total of 95 goals. With just one vote, this was Peterborough’s third best end of season score. They have only picked up 100 or more goals once and that is their personal best of 129 goals scored in the 2010/11 Season. Last season they finished on 55 goals.

PORTSMOUTH finished on a total of 88 goals which is their best score in their last five seasons with Golden Goals. Last season they finished on a total of 55 goals. They had a total of four votes. EXETER picked up their best score with us with 75 goals. That beats their last top score of 55 goals from our very first season. They had just one vote this season. TOTTENHAM picked up their best goals total in their last five games with 78 goals. They just beat last seasons total of 75 goals. They had just three votes this season. WIGAN picked up their second best end of season score with 83 goals just missing out beating their highest score of 89 in our 1998/99 Season.

In Scotland, CLYDE picked up their best score with 60 goals in their second season with Golden Goals. They have beaten their first score of 41 goals back in our 2004/05 Season.

THE WORST THREE TEAMS FINISHED AS

BLACKPOOL (40) NORWICH (45) BOLTON (46) Total of 131 goals.

Well the worst team for this season finished with just 40 goals in their 17^th Season with Golden Goals and they were BLACKPOOL. Blackpool’s goals were scored in a total of 48 league/cup games. This is not their worst score as they finished on only 39 goals last Season. They had just one votes this season. Next we had NORWICH finishing on 45 goals which is their lowest score in their last five seasons with us. They had just one vote this season and their worst score is 44 goals from the 2004/05 season. BOLTON finished in third place with their lowest score in fourteen season of 46 goals. They also had just one vote. Their lowest score prior to this was 49 goals back in our 1995/96 Season. Our fourth worst team was WATFORD with 46 goals. They picked up their second lowest score just beating their lowest goals total of 41 goals back in the 2006/07 Season. They had just one vote.

Meanwhile ARSENAL finished on 77 goals which was their worst in their last 17 seasons with us. CHELSEA finished on 76 goals which was their lowest score in their last 15 seasons. MK DONS finished on 49 which was their worst score ever in Golden Goals. PRESTON also picked up their worst score in 19 seasons. Last season they finished on 101 goals. CHARLTON scored just 50 goals this season which is their lowest in their last ten outings.

In Scotland STENHOUSEMUIR picked up their lowest score of 49 goals. Their previous lowest was 50 goals back in the 1997/98 Season. QUEEN OF THE SOUTH finished on 51 goals which is their lowest in their last five seasons with us.

So how did our new teams do in their very first season with Golden Goals.Well BURTON ALBION in the English League One finished on a total of 59 goals and finished second in the table where they will be playing in the Championship next season.

In Scotland we had two new teams. BERWICK finished with a total of 50 goals while QUEENS PARK finished on 55 goals.

The highest scoring team in our 33^rd Season is CELTIC from the Scottish Premiership, when they beat Hamilton 8-1 at home in a midweek league game in week twenty-five.

BLACKPOOL from League One have picked up the most number of blank score sheets this season with a total of twenty-three out of forty-eight games played.

 Our Golden Goals blog has picked up a lot of interest again this season as we have now had over 7,600 hits to date. I was hoping that we would attract more people out in the big wide world to join in but no luck just yet, so lets hope that we can for our 34^th Season.
