Week One

Here we go our 36th Season of Golden Goals. If you have been following us over the past years, then you will know what this competition is all about. If not then you have missed out on this unique Football Competition. The teams for this season are in bold caps as usual.

We have ended up with a total of 133 entries this seasons competition and I would like to thank everyone who has  helped us to get to that magic figure which becomes our third best Golden Goals season. It is with regret that we did not reach our previous record of 149 from last Season. Although we have seen some names missing from last season, we have gained another twelve new ones. So who is going to be our 36th Champion? We will find out in the next forty-two weeks time but I wish you all the very best of luck.

The most popular selection for any combination was once again Celtic, Manchester City with Tottenham. Another popular team selection was Arsenal, Celtic and Manchester City being the second most popular choice.

We have a total of fifteen past Champions playing this season. Our last season Champion is also back and that was Chris Bolbery. Chris has changed his winning combination from last season by dropping Wigan and picking up Ross County this season with his other teams Celtic and Manchester City.  We also have a total of twenty ladies playing this season.

So how did the voting of teams for this season finally end up. It was MANCHESTER CITY that picked up the biggest number of votes as they came in with a total of 81. Last season they had a total of 39 and scored a total of 123 goals which is their third best score with Golden Goals. So this was no surprise that they would be the most voted teams this season. CELTIC after their biggest vote in our history of 113 votes last season, they have only picked up 70 votes this season. Staying with the Scottish teams the second highest voted team comes from the Scottish Premiership again and they are RANGERS with 17 votes which is a lot better than last seasons of  just nine.
The Scottish teams did very well again this season with a total of  fourteen teams being picked. That is a record for us.We have 6 from the Scottish Premiership, 4 from the Championship ,League One with 3 and 1 in League Two.

With the English teams things have changed as they always do in this competition. We have a total of  12  Premiership teams in this years competition with MANCHESTER CITY becoming our top team again this season.  Next comes LIVERPOOL with 36 votes. They were our seventh most voted team last season with 19 votes. In third place with 23 votes  is TOTTENHAM. They were our fifth most voted team last season with 22 votes. In fourth place down from two last season is ARSENAL. They have just 15 votes compared to 32 last season. Our fifth team is SUNDERLAND with 13 votes. They were our seventh most voted team last season with just 4 votes. In the Championship we have picked up 13 teams compared to 17 last season,  while in League one we have 16 with 7 teams picked once again from League two.

Week One in our very first weekend of the new season, we are already starting to pay out the prize money as we had two winners to share our first £6 weekend prize money. Our winners are DAVID BARRETT and our  2012/13 Champion ALICE STUBBS who both picked up this weekends highest score of  8 goals from just two of their teams. David is in his second season with us and he finished in the winning frame last season in 16th place scoring a total of 305 goals. Alice became Champion in her very first season with Chelsea, Manchester United and Rangers and picked up a total of 318 goals and £100 in winnings.  So here are their combinations

David  BRENTFOD 5, CELTIC 3, MANCHESTER CITY -
                               Alice  BRENTFORD 5, CELTIC 3, CHELSEA --

Out of our 62 teams that have been picked this season, fifteen had no game and another seven teams failed to score any goals in their first game. The highest score at the weekend came from the English Championship where BRENTFORD with just two votes won their opening game 5-1 at home to ROTHERHAM. This is their 17th Season with us and last season they scored a total of 70 goals. Their biggest score was back in the 1998/99 with 95 goals. So lets have a quick run down on this weekends results starting with the English Championship.

CHAMPIONSHIP
So Brentford have started off their season in great style and are top of the table. In second place is LEEDS UNITED who won 3-1 at home to STOKE. Derby drop down to fifth place after their win on Friday night while SWANSEA are sixth as they 2-1 away to Sheffield United. SCOTTISH LEAGUES
Now you might already know that the Scottish have already played their first round of the League Cup and with the new group format once again, so most of our teams have already played more than four games this weekend. But here is the results of the first league games.

In the Scottish Premiership, HEARTS go straight on top as they win 4-1 away to HAMILTON. HIBERNIAN are in second place as they win 3-0 at home to Motherwell. CELTIC are third as they win 3-1 at home to Livingston. RANGERS drew their first game 1-1 away to ABERDEEN with ten men.
In the Championship AYR are top here as they win 2-0 at home to Partick. Ayr are now on a total of 14 goals and they have scored in all of their last five games.  They have started the season well by winning all their group cup games. FALKIRK picked up their third blank of the season after they lost their first league game 1-0 at home to Inverness CT. Their other blank score sheets came in the league cup 1st round games. Falkirk are on a total of 4 goals. ROSS COUNTY won 1-0 at home to ALLOA and they are now on a total of 8 goals and they have scored in all of their five games but they are out of the league cup. Alloa picked up their second blank of the season.
In League One, DUMBARTON picked up their 5h goal of the season as they win 2-0 away to East Fife. Promoted STENHOUSEMUIR won their first league game 1-0 at home to Brechin. They are now on a total of 5 goals with four from the cup games. RAITH ROVERS drew their first league game 1-1 away to Stranraer and after scoring in all of their five games, they are now on a total of 7 goals.
In League Two we have just one team this season and they are PETERHEAD who failed to get promoted last season. They finished on a total of 105 goals which is their best to date. But what a difference a season makes as they lost three of their four games and the one that they did win was on penalties. But after a run of four blank score sheets, they are now on the score sheet as they drew 1-1 at home to Queen’s Park.

As you can see that most of us have picked some goals in our first week of football except the ones with English premiership teams, but GRAHAM HARRIS is out in front by a single goal with his combination of Hearts, Tottenham and W.B.A

So here are the top ten in our very first weekend of football.
