Last Post Of The Season

The final whistle has been blown on our historic 31st  Season of Golden Goals and what a season we had. Although we did not have the success that we were hoping for with the number of entries,  the number of goals scored made up for that. The good news is that we do not have to wait long for the next season to start. Although we once again lost a few friends this season, we have also gained some new ones. Lets hope that we can continue with this nice run as we have had a lot of success over our full 31 year history of Golden Goals. This season we have had a few records that have been broken this season, but more on this later. I hope that you have had a lot of fun watching your name go up and down the table and here is the final position of the top winning frame.

So it’s Congratulations to PAUL DAVEY as he now becomes our 31st Champion with Golden Goals and takes the prize money of a grand total of £100 in winnings. He also had one shared weekend win to his name.  We can now add  Paul’s name in our history book and in the Champions League where he finished in 2nd place on 348 goals. Paul had the combination of  MAN CITY (137) RANGERS (120) and WOLVES (91). Just two of his teams finished in our top best three teams and they were Man City and Rangers. Paul picked up  just two blank score sheet throughout the season and his highest score was 12 goals in week 8. Paul had a total of 9 week’s at number one. He also finished five goals clear of  Paul Hudson who finished in second place.

THE BEST THREE TEAMS FINISHED AS

MAN CITY (137) RANGERS (120) CELTIC (110) Total of  367 goals.

We had four teams that picked up 100 or more goals this season. They are MAN CITY with that fantastic record breaking  score of 137 goals. They have beaten Peterborough's score of 129 goals set in our 2010/11 Season. This is City’s third season with 100 or more end of season goals total in twenty appearances and that is one hell of a total to beat. Or is it? This is then their best season in their last eight appearances in Golden Goals and they had a total of 27 votes. Their best score before this season was 124 scored back in our 2001/02 Season.
Our second best team was RANGERS with 120 goals, this is their best in their last twenty-one seasons as their best score of 126 was back in our 1992/93 Season. RANGERS have now rack up 14 seasons of 100 or more goals in 30 appearances. They had 38 votes this time round. Last season they picked up 107 goals. CELTIC left it till the very last moment to pick up another 100 goals to end their season. Celtic finished with 110 goals and have been in all of our season’s and as they pick up their 13th season of 100 goals, they have now made it four season’s in a row. Their best score is 122 goals scored back in our 2000/01 Season. Celtic were our top team for votes with 41. Last season they finished on a total of 117 goals. So how did the rest of our top teams do this season?
Our fourth best team was LIVERPOOL who ended the season with a total of 110 goals. With a total of 8 votes, this was Liverpool’s second best end of season score. Their best score is still 127 goals scored back in our 1985/86 Season. This is the sixth time that they have scored 100 goals or more in our 31 Season’s. Last season they finished on 78goals. Next came LEYTON ORIENT. They finished on 99 goals which is their biggest end of season score which they also finished on in our 1985/86 Season. Although they failed to win a place in the Championship this time round, they could be a team to look out for next season. They had a total of just one vote. Last season they finished on 80 goals. WATFORD finished on 86 goals which was their best since our 2005/06 Season with 88 goals. Their best score is 102 goals back in our 1984/85 Season. WOLVES finished on 91 goals and this was their best since our 2002/03 Season with 104 goals. PETERBOROUGH finished on 94 goals and that was their third best score out of their six season’s with Golden Goals. LEICESTER CITY picked up their biggest score with Golden Goals with 98 goals. They have beaten their 2008/09 Season score of 94 goals. BRISTOL CITY picked up their biggest end of season score with 80. They have beaten their best score of 79 which came in 1983/84 and then again in 2004/05 Season’s. FLEETWOOD TOWN finished on 73 goals which is their best score by far as last season they finished on 60 goals in their first season.
In Scotland, QUEEN OF THE SOUTH picked up their best score with 67 goals. This is their third season with us. ABERDEEN finished on 69 goals. We have not seen Aberdeen since 1997/98 Season when they finished on 50 goals, which is their worst score to date.

THE WORST THREE TEAMS FINISHED AS

CRYSTAL PALACE (37) BLACKPOOL (39) DONCASTER (43) Total of 119 goals.

Well the worst team for this season finished with just 37 goals in their 20 Season’s with Golden Goals and they were CRYSTAL PALACE. Palace picked up just 37 goals out of a total of 41 league/cup games. Their best score is 93 goals scored back in our 1996/97 Season. They had just one vote this season. BLACKPOOL  with 3 votes had the worst season to date with just 39 goals. Their  lowest score before this season was 63 goals back in our 1989/90 Season. Last season they picked up 65 goals. DONCASTER with a single vote were in their third season with us. They picked up their lowest score on record of only 43 goals. The last time that we had Doncaster was back in our 2006/07 Season when they finished on a total of 64 goals. CHELSEA with 79 goals picked up their worst score since 2000/01 when they finished again on 79 goals. They were a long way off  last season’s score of 108 goals. MAN UTD did even better by picking up their worst score since 1992/93 when they finished on a total of 73 goals. This season they finished on 75 goals. ASTON VILLA also picked up their worst score with 43 goals. Their lowest until now was 53 goals back in 1996/97 Season. In Scotland MORTON finished on 43 goals which is their lowest score to date by one goal. Back in our 2009/10 Season they finished on 44 goals.

The highest score of the season came from RANGERS as they won 8-0 at home against Stenhousemuir in a league game. They also finished the season with a 100% scoring record of 120 goals in forty-three league and cup games.

CHARLTON holds this seasons record for the most number of  blank score sheets with a total of  21 out of their total 53 league and cup games.

Well that’s it, another season of GOLDEN GOALS has finished. I still can not believe that I have been doing this competition for 31 year’s and after all that, I am still looking forward to the next one.
It’s a great shame that our Golden Goals blog has not been successful at all which is a great shame.I was hoping that we would attract people out in the big world wide, but although they seem to be looking in, we have had no enquiries at all. So I will keep on doing the World Cup on the blog and perhaps another season to see what happens out there.

ARSENAL Win the FA Cup

Congratulations to ARSENAL in winning the FA Cup 2014. The game was one to remember as Arsenal went  2-0 down in the first 8 minutes against Hull to come back and win the game 3-2 after extra time. Their first bit of silver wear in nine years.
Arsenal had a total of twenty-three people that picked them as part of their combination this season in Golden Goals and they finished on a total of 85 goals. Not a good season in respect for where they finished in the premiership and by the number of goals scored. Last season they finished on a grand total of 92. Their highest end of season goals total stands at 103 goals scored back in our 2002/03 Season.
We also had the League Two play-off 2nd leg game between SOUTHEND and Burton. Southend were 1-0 down from the first leg and drew 2-2 in the second leg. Burton are the one’s to go through to the final play-off 3-2 on aggregate. They will meet FLEETWOOD TOWN in the final.
