No Joy In The Play-off Finals

We have the last two results for our 33rd year here at Golden Goals and they were the finals for the play-offs for the English League’s One & two.

In League One we had just one of our teams in the play-offs and they were MILLWALL. They had beaten Bradford in the semi-finals and faced Barnsley in the final. But the Lions roar was more of a Lions growl as Barnsley went two up within the first twenty minutes. MIllwall did come back just after the first half hour to go in at half time 2-1 down. Things did not get any better in the second half as Barnsley scored a third goal.
Although Millwall finally lost 3-1, am sure that we will hear more of Millwall next season. Millwall finished on a total of 83 goals and they had scored in all of their last nine games.

In League twos final PLYMOUTH who finished in fifth place in the league, and had scored in all of their last eleven games they faced AFC Wimbledon in the final but lost 2-0 to them. Both of Wimbledon’s goals came very late in the game in the 78th minute and in injury time after 90 minutes with a penalty. Plymouth picked up their 8th blank of the season.

Well that’s the end of the 2015/16 season but we still have the final New Sheet of do which should be out to you all that are in the competition by the weekend. But for those of you who take a look now and then on this blog, please still do so as I will be publishing how our Golden Goals teams did over the season.

Hull Back In Premiership

After a tough second leg game against Derby in the Championship Semi-final, HULL made it to the finals to play against Sheffield Wednesday for a place in the Premiership. The good news to our five Golden Goals voters is that they are back in the Premiership after they beat Sheffield Wednesday just 1-0. The goal came in the last ten minutes of play and they finished on a fantastic total of 83 goals. Hull had a good season in the Championship after they were relegated from the Premiership last season. They finished in fourth place in the league.

FALKIRK’S fantastic run in the Scottish play-offs has come to an end as they lost their second and final leg in their promotion race for the premiership. After winning the first leg 1-0 against Kilmarnock, they really got in to trouble at Rugby Park and lost 4-0 away. Kilmarnock won 4-1 on aggregate and remained in the premiership for next season. Falkirk who finished second after Rangers in the Championship, picked up their fifth blank score sheet of the season.

United Win FA Cup

MANCHESTER UNITED have won the FA CUP for the twelfth time as they beat Crystal Palace 2-1 after extra time. The last time that Manchester United won the cup was back in 2004.
Crystal Palace did not show much fight in the first half of normal time and let United do all the work. But they held United’s attacks and it was 0-0 at half time. Second half and I was hoping for Palace to jump into action but with just the odd attack at United’s goal but palace did scored the first goal of the match by Puncheon after 78 minutes but United quickly respond to their goal and scored a few minutes later with a goal by Mata. United did hit the woodwork twice in the second half but at the end of 90 minutes the scored ended 1-1.
So extra time was needed and the play picked up pace. But United’s Smalling was sent off after 105 minutes for a second foul. So with ten men, United played even better and United’s winner came 12 minutes left of the second half of extra time with a goal by Lingard. It would of been nice to see Palace win the cup for the first time but they are not up to standard just yet.

United have not had a great season and they finished fifth in the premiership and with a total of 66 goals.

Hibernian Win the Scottish Cup after 114 years.

HIBERNIAN have won the Scottish Cup final after they beat RANGERS 3-2 at Hampden Park. Hibs went into the lead after just three minutes of play with a goal from Stokes before Rangers equalised within the half hour of the first half. It was 1-1 at half time but Rangers came back with a goal after 64 minutes before Hibs scored two goals in the last ten minutes of play.
Hibernian may of missed out to play in the Premiership next season but they do now have a shining new cup in the trophy room. Hibernian finished on a total of 88 goals while Rangers although promoted back into the Premiership, end their season on a total of 113 goals.

Millwall Roar into Final

MILLWALL have roared into the finals of the League One play-offs as they drew 1-1 with Bradford in the second leg game. Millwall win the tie 4-2 on aggregate and will play Barnsley on 29th May. Millwall take their goals total to 82. They have just two votes this season and have scored in all of their last eight games.

United Win Their Last League Game

MANCHESTER UNITED have finally played their last league game of the season against Bournemouth and won 3-1 at home. The result moves them up to fifth place in the Premiership on 66 points the same as Manchester City above them, but City have the better goal difference.
United are now on a total of 64 goals and they still have the FA Cup Final to play in this weekend against Crystal Palace.
In the Championship 2nd leg play-off game between HULL and DERBY we nearly saw Derby turn the play-off around. They were 3-0 down against Hull from the first leg but won the second leg 2-0. But Hull won this tie 3-2 on aggregate and will play Sheffield Wednesday in the final on 28th May at home. Derby finish the season on 72 goals while Hull picked up their 14th blank score sheet of the season.

Week Forty-One

RICHARD WILLIAMS lead has been cut right down to just one goal this weekend as he picks up just five goals for the week. This is now his 19th week over the season and five weeks in a row. Richard’s combination has Hibernian, Manchester City  and Rangers. He has climbed up the Champions table this week and is now in 24th place as he has now beaten my score of 290 goals back in the 2008/09 Season and Ricky Wood/Gerry Kyei joint winners of our 2007/08 Season with 293 goals.
SIMON DICKINSON has jumped into second place this weekend and is one goal behind Richard as his combination picked him up a total of 11 goals for the week. His teams are Celtic, Manchester  City and Portsmouth. Simon has already had a weekend at the top in week twenty-eight.

At the other end, STEPTOE & SON is still at the 119 spot after their combination picked up three goals from midweek. Their combination is once again Queens Park, Queens Park Rangers and Queen of the South. Although this is their third weekend at the bottom of the table they are now in their 12th week at 119. They remain in the 29th place in the losers league again this weekend.

100 MIDWEEK GOALS JACKPOT
Most of us managed to pick up some last minute midweek goals this week but the highest score to be picked up this week was once again five goals and they went to STEVEN AYRES, BRADLEY CLARK and AMANDA MORRISON.
The race for the £40 Midweek Jackpot is over for this season for DANIEL GOODSON who is just four goals away from the cash with a total of 96 goals. His team were Manchester City, Middlesbrough and Rangers
In second place this week we have RICHARD WILLIAMS who moves up from third place with a total of 91 goals with his goals coming from the two Hibernian games with four goals. CHRIS SETFORD still on 89 goals moves down to third place while down to fourth place we have CRAIG EVANS with 88 goals. In Fifth place on 87 goals we have DAVID STAINS who moved down from third place. In sixth place both on 86 we have JOHN DAVIES and BENJAMIN WAYMARK both moved down from fourth place last week.

There was no cash prize money again this weekend but if there was it would of gone to DARREN DAVIDSON who picked up the highest score of the weekend with a fantastic total of 14 goals. That is his person best of the season and it shot Darren's name up to 21st place. This is the highest that Darren has been this season and he has had a total of four blank score sheets. The goals came from ARSENAL 4, CELTIC 7 and HULL 3.

Leicester City are Finally Champions

First we must congratulate Leicester City on winning the Premiership league title for the very first time in their history. No-one in the Golden Goals competition had them in their selection this season but it is going to be interesting on how many may next season.
The reason why they have at last won the title is that the only team that could take their dream from them was TOTTENHAM and they needed to beat CHELSEA their London rivals last night. But after going two up Chelsea came back and drew the game 2-2 after a very tough game where tempers flared on both sides. Still Tottenham take their goals tally to 76 while Chelsea are on 72.

In the Championship, BURNLEY are back on top as they win just 1-0 at home against QUEENS PARK RANGERS. Burnley take their goals tally to 72 while Rangers picked up their 14th blank of the season and now they have scored just one goal in their last four games. It’s 73 goals for BRIGHTON as they drew 1-1 at home to DERBY who are now on 70 goals.
