Last Update of the Season

The final whistle has now been blown on our historic 36th  Season of Golden Goals and what a great season it was for goals. But it was not the season that we managed to beat our highest ever recorded number of entries with 149 from last season. The success of this season was all down to you. The good news is that we do not have to wait long for the next season to start. Although we once again lost a few friends this season, we have also gained some new ones. Lets hope that we can continue with this nice run as we have had a lot of success over our full 36 year history of Golden Goals.

This season we have had a few  records that have been broken this season, but more on this later. I hope that you have had a lot of fun watching your name go up and down the table and as shown above is where your combination of teams have left you standing in the final position of the season. But before we go all into that, lets take a look at what happened to the last few games of the season.

Scottish WILLIAM HILL Cup Final
Champions CELTIC won the Scottish Cup final for the 39th time after they beat HEARTS 2-1 at Hampden Park to become the first Scottish team to win three successive domestic Trebles. All of the goals came in the second half where Hearts scored in the 52nd minute from Edwards. Celtic’s goals came in the 62nd minute with a penalty scored by Edouard. Edouard scored his and Celtic’s second goal in the 82nd minute. Hearts finished on a total of 72 goals, which is the same amount of goals when we last saw Hearts in the 2015/16 Season. Their highest score came a season earlier in the 2014/15 Season with 98 goals. They had just one vote this season. Celtic became our second team this season to finish on 100 goals. They have now scored 100 or more goals in nine consecutive seasons. They finished the season nine points clear of second place Rangers in the Premiership. They had a total of 70 votes this season.

Championship Play-Off Final
DERBY went a goal down against ASTON VILLA in a very poor first half with a goal from El Ghazi.  In the second half, Villa scored their second goal in the 59th minute from Mc Ginn but it took Derby a hell of a long time to get into this game and scored in the 81st minute from Waghorn. From then on it was end to end but the score remained 2-1 to Villa after the final whistle. Villa finished the season on a total of 87 goals, which is a Golden Goals record for them. They beat their previous highest score of 80 goals from the 2009/10 and last season of 2017/18. They had a total of six votes this season. Derby picked up goal number 90 which is their best in our last three seasons. They had a total of ten votes

League One Play-Off Final
CHARLTON scored all three goals in this final, starting with a og from Sorr in the first five minutes of play to give SUNDERLAND the lead. Charlton came back to level the score 1-1 at half time with a goal from Purrington in the 35th minute. The game looked as if extra time was needed to separate these two teams, but Bauer for Charlton scored in the fourth minute of added on time to win 2-1. Charlton finished on a total of 85 goals and had scored in all of their last eleven games. It was their best season since the 2011/12 with 90 goals. They had four votes this season. Sunderland also finished on a total of 85 which is their best since their highest score of 108 goals in the 1998/99 Season. They had a total of 13 votes this season.

So it’s Congratulations to KELLIE STRATTON as she now becomes our 36th Champion with Golden Goals staying at the top for the last two weeks and ten over the season. She has taken the winning prize money of  a total of £100 and also picked up one weekends win with a Rollover in Week Three taking her final lump sum to £112 in cash. We can now add  kellie’s name in our history book and in the Champions League where she finished in 7th place on 331 goals and becomes our fifth lady to do so. Kellie had the winning combination of  CELTIC (100) MANCHESTER CITY (137) and WEST BROM (94). Just two of her teams finished in our top best three teams and they were Manchester City and Celtic. Kellie picked up only four blank score sheets throughout the season and her highest score was 16 goals in Week Three. In the end she finished just one goal clear of  Bob sawyer who finally finished in second place with a total of 330 goals.

ROAD TO CHAMPION
So our new Champion’s name, KELLIE STRATTON is now in our history book, but what about the other people who managed to get to that magic number one spot. We had a total of just eight players that made it there is season. We already know that Kellie was at the top for nine weeks who stayed there the longest. Next came GRAHAM HARRIS with eight weeks staying there in our first three weeks of the season. He was also there from weeks 5 to 7 and then another run from weeks 10 and 11.  We then had GARY BROWN and JAMIE WOOD with seven weeks each. Next with six weeks came BOB SAWYER starting from week 31. while JAMES SOMERVILLE was there for four weeks. We then had two players that picked up a single week each. They were MICHAEL FISHER in week 25 of the season and  DAVID BARRETT in week 32.

Below is the list of our top five champions of  Golden Goals.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

                           NAME                             M/W           W/E         TOTAL

                           1. L. KING                       116             239             355      2001/02
                           2. P. DAVEY                     132             216             348      2013/14
                           3. J. WOOD                        92             252             344      2016/17
                           4. M. PEPPERRELL           91             247             338      2002/03
                           5. C. BOLBERY                  95             239             334      2009/10

So what happened to our past Champions. Well we had a record total of fifteen that played in this seasons competition with four finishing in the top twenty-seven and they were DAVID SOMERVILLE our 2009/10 Champion in 5th place followed by our 2010/11 Champion TONY GUY in 16th place. Our next Champion finished in 21st place who was our 1994/95 Champion GEOFF DOCKERILL and last season’s Champion, CHRIS BOLBERY finished in 23rd place.

At the other end of the table, we had six players that landed on that rotten number of 133. GRAEME BRITTON holds the record for the best of our losers league with 214 goals from our 2004/05 season. The player who finished rock bottom this season was JOHN FILTNESS. John was there for a total of thirty-seven weeks and started in Week 5-7 but was then there from weeks 10 to 43. Over the season John picked up ten blank score sheets over the season. He had the combination of  BIRMINGHAM (64) HAMILTON (33) and LIVERPOOL (91) total of 188 goals. John’s combination finished in 10th place in our losers league and we can now add’s his name in the history book. Next with just two weeks was Sarah Marshall and she stayed there from Weeks eight and nine. Sarah was then followed by four players with one week each. Terry Warwick in Week One, Ray Buckland in Week Two, Peter Porter in Week Three, and our 2016/17 Champion, John Wood in Week Four.

100 MIDWEEK GOALS JACKPOT
The Prize Money for the 100 Midweek Goals Jackpot of £30 went to GRAHAM HARRIS in week thirty-six by reaching 100 midweek goals first. We had a total of just five players to hit 100 this season, Graham finally finished with a total of 111 goals.  The other four were JOHN DAVIES and ADAM SANSOM both with 107 goals, JUNE TIGHE with 106 and KELLIE STRATTON with 104 goals. Daryl Nicholls holds the highest midweek record with 136 goals from our 2016/17 Season.

BEAT THE SCORE
The fantastic sum of  £65 cash prize money for BEAT THE SCORE has not been picked up once again this season. The prize money will go to the first person who scores 19 goals or more at the weekend. So I hope that we can add more cash to the pot next season. The holder of this record is Mark Rymer with 18 goals scored way back in our 1998/99 season, so it’s about time that some-one beat that score?

THE BEST THREE TEAMS FINISHED AS

MANCHESTER CITY (137) CELTIC (100) RANGERS (98) Total of  335 goals.

We had just two teams this season that picked up 100 or more goals. They were our best team MANCHESTER CITY who ended the season with another total of 137 goals which equals their best score from the 2013/14 Season. City have played in 50 games this season which gave them an average score of 2.7 goals per game. They were our top English team with 81 votes and they picked up just three blank score sheets. Last season they finished on 123 goals.  This is their 25th season with Golden Goals and this is their 5th season with 100 or more goals scored by the end of the season. Over the 25 seasons, they have scored a total of 2090 goals which now gives them an average score of 83 goals per season. In second place was CELTIC with 100 goals, but this is there worst score in their last eight seasons. They picked up a total of nine blank score sheets. Last season they finished on 105 goals. Celtic have also scored 100 or more goals in their last nine consecutive seasons which is a Golden Goals record. They had a total of 70 votes this season and the goals gives them a total of 3508 in thirty-six seasons they have been with us. That now gives them an average score of 97 goals per season. The third best team was RANGERS who finished on a total of 98 goals which is the same as last seasons total. Rangers have been with us for thirty-five seasons now and over that time they have netted a total of 3414 goals. That now gives them an average score of 97 goals per season. They had 17 vote this season and they picked up a total of eight blank score sheets. Our fourth best team who was just outside of our best team frame was WEST BROMWICH ALBION. They have had a great season ending with a total of 94 goals which is a lot better than 41 last season. They picked up four votes this season and nine blank score sheets.

So lets see what happened to our other teams to see if they have broken any records this time round.  MANCHESTER UNITED picked up the lowest score in their last three season’s with a total of 75 goals. Last season they finished on 87 goals. Their best score was in the 1993/94 Season with 117 goals. They had a total of just eight votes this season. LIVERPOOL was better than last seasons 88 with 91 goals this season. TOTTENHAM finished on 83 goals which is their lowest in three seasons. ARSENAL finished on a total of 82 goals which is the same as last years total. WEST HAM finished on 68 goals which is their best in the last three seasons. LEEDS UNITED finished on 79 goals which is their best in the last seven seasons. PORTSMOUTH finished on a total of 91 goals which is their best since the 2002/03 Season with 101 goals. MANSFIELD picked up a total of 78 goals which is now their best score, beating last seasons total of 74. LINCOLN CITY have beat their previous record of 78 goals in the 2005/06 Season with 84 goals. BARNSLEY have beat their record of 79 goals from their first season with Golden Goals in 1998/99 with 89 this season. MK DONS picked up their highest score since their record score in the 2014/15 Season of 115 goals with 75 goals. BURTON ALBION have beaten their record score of 59 goals in their first season with us in 2015/16 Season with 76 goals.
Our Scottish teams had a great season with DUMBARTON picking up a record 63 goals beating their previous bests of 53 goals in the 1988/89 Season. ALLOA also beat their best record score of 47 goals in the 1993/94 Season with 52 goals. RAITH ROVERS picked up a total of 88 goals which beats their best score of 72 goals in the 2007/08 Season.

THE WORST THREE TEAMS FINISHED AS

HAMILTON (33) IPSWICH (37) FULHAM (40) Total of 110 goals.

Well our worst team for this season finished with just 33 goals in their 4th appearance with Golden Goals and they were HAMILTON. This is their worst score by beating their lowest score of 40 goals scored in the season of 1999/00. They had just two votes this season and they picked up a total of twenty-two blank score sheets. In fact Hamilton will be in our record books for scoring the lowest number of goals in a season.  Next we had IPSWICH finishing on 37 goals which is their lowest score in their 22nd appearance’s with us. They had just one vote this season. FULHAM finished in third place with their lowest score on record with just 40 goals. They also had just one vote.
Other teams that picked up their lowest score on record are NOTTS COUNTY with 51 goals, ROCHDALE with 59 and ACCRINGTON STANLEY with 57 goals. From our Scottish teams there were FALKIRK with 43 goals and STENHOUSEMUIR with 46 goals.

Our biggest result in our 36th Season comes from MANCHESTER CITY as they win 9-0 at home against league one BURTON ALBION in the Carabao/League Cup semi-final first leg tie in Week Twenty-Four.

HAMILTON have picked up the most number of  blank score sheets this season with a total of twenty-two out of a total of forty-three games played.

We have ended up with twenty-seven winners this season and here they all are

Week Forty-Two

In Week Forty-Two of the competition we have now had two minute of  injury time with the very last full league fixture for our Scottish Premiership teams. All but eight of us managed to pick up some goals this weekend.

100 MIDWEEK GOALS JACKPOT
We still have five players that have now reached 100 Midweek goals this week. GRAHAM HARRIS is on a total of 109 goals. His combination is Hearts, Tottenham and West Brom. John Davies and Adam Sansom are still both in second place with 107 goals. In third place is now June Tighe with 105 goals moving up from four. Kellie Stratton has moved back down to fourth place on a total of 104 goals. In fifth place we still have Toby Bicknell on 99 goals.

WEEKEND RESULTS
We had only had eight of our teams in action over weekend with only one of them failing to score any goals. In the last full Scottish Premiership games this weekend and we did fairly well again from our teams.

FA CUP FINAL
We had just one of our teams in the FA Cup final and they were our top team MANCHESTER CITY. Their opponents were Watford who have gone off form in their last four games. So Manchester  City were favourites to win the cup and they did not let the City supports down. I was unable to see the first half of the game where City went in at half time 2-0 up against Watford. The goals came in the 26th minute by Silva and then Gabriel Jesus in the 38th minute.
In the second half  Watford came out fighting and they gave City a couple of heart stopping moments, but that all finished when De Bruyne scored in the 61st minute of  play. Watford then gave way to the pressure that City were throwing at them and Gabriel Jesus scored his second in the 68th minute. Stirling then scored two goals in the 81st and 87th minutes and Watford were done. City could of scored more but a 6-0 win in the FA Cup is the biggest result that we have not seen since Bury beat Derby 6-0 in the 1903 Cup Final. City have now won the cup for the sixth time and they have done the domestic treble and that has not been done since Chelsea in the 2009/10 Season. The six goals now gives City a fantastic total of 137 goals which matches their biggest score in the 2013/14 Season, they could of scored more this season when you look at some of their results.

SCOTTISH LEAGUES
In the Scottish Premiership, the very last games for them as Champions CELTIC won 2-1 at home against HEARTS to take their goals total nearer to that 100 goals with 98. Hearts are on 71 goals. RANGERS in second place lost 2-1 away to Kilmarnock who finished in third place in the league. Rangers end their season on 98 goals. HAMILTON won 2-0 at home to St Johnstone and they end the season on a total of 33 goals. After a two game dry spell for goals, HIBERNIAN lost 2-1 at home to ABERDEEN to end the season on 61 goals. Aberdeen finished on a total of 74 goals and remained in fourth place in the league.

In the Championship – Play-Off  Final 2nd Leg, RAITH ROVERS drew their second leg game 0-0 away to Queen of South and so they lost 3-1 on aggregate. Rovers after a goal run of fourteen games, picked up their fourth blank of the season.

Our BEST three teams this week with Golden Goals are

MANCHESTER CITY (137) RANGERS (98) CELTIC (98) Total of 333 goals

OUR WORST THREE TEAMS ARE

HAMILTON (33) IPSWICH (37) FULHAM (40) Total of 110 goals

Our Best team finished the season as  MANCHESTER CITY after they had scored  in all of their last fourteen League and Cup games played.

Our worst team this week is HAMILTON as they have picked up a total of twenty-two blank score sheets out of forty-three League and Cup games played this season.

Our biggest result in our 36th Season comes from MANCHESTER CITY as they win 9-0 at home against league one BURTON ALBION in the Carabao/League Cup semi-final first leg tie in Week Twenty-Four.

KELLIE STRATTON is back on top this weekend and she could be this seasons Champion as she picks up a total of nine goals for the week. Kellie has Celtic, Manchester City and West Brom. She has now been at the top for a total of eight weekends over the season. Kellie has also moved up the Champions League to 7th place and has now beaten our 1985/86 Champion Ian Sweeney’s score of 325 goals and our very first Champion in Golden Goals, Pete Christopher’s score of 327 goals. Bob Swayer has dropped down to second place after picking up a total of eight goals all coming from the weekend. Bob team still in play are Celtic as Luton and Manchester City have now finished their season.
At the other end at 133 we still have John Filtness at the bottom for a total of thirty-three consecutive weekends as he picks up a total of two goals all coming from the weekend. He has now had thirty-six weeks at the bottom but he is now twelve goals adrift  this weekend. His teams are Birmingham, Hamilton and Liverpool. John has made more progress in our Loser’s League as he has beaten the score of 187 from John Wood’s Ziggy Teams in the 2011/12 Season. John has made it into the top ten this week in tenth place.

Here is how our top ten looks this weekend and could we be seeing our 36th Champion?

Sunderland in Play-Off Final
