Week Twenty

 

In Week Twenty of the competition we are at half-time here at Golden Goals and the second half is just around the corner. We had just one winner again this weekend who picked up the full Weekend Prize Money of £5. Our winner has become our 21st winner of the season and they are our 2002/03 Champion MIKE PEPPERRELL. Mike won on the lowest winning score of the season with 8 goals.

Mike started with Golden Goals back in the 2000/01 Season where he finished in in 89th place with a total of 229 goals. Mike became Champion in the 2002/03 Season with a total of 338 goals and is currently in third place in our Champions League. Last season he finished in 62nd place with 256 goals. This season Mike has been as high as 36th place in Week Five and has picked up four blank weekend score sheets. Manchester City is his best team. His winning teams are

100 MIDWEEK GOALS JACKPOT

Just under half of us have picked up goals this week and the race for the cash has changed slightly again this week. Remaining in first place this week we still have MARK GREGORY leading the pack, now with a total of 46 goals. Mark has Barnsley, Celtic and Middlesbrough. Remaining in second place we still have TONY KING and ANN WELLARD but they are now joined with PETER PORTER and JAMES SOMERVILLE both move up from fourth place. All four are on a total of 44 goals. In third place we still have our 2017/18 Champion CHRIS BOLBERY now with a total of 43 goals. In fourth place both up from five last week we have  ANDY EYLES and BAILEY MORAN. Both are on a total of 41 goals. In fifth place up from six we have GEOFF CARTHY now with a total of 40 goals. 

WEEKEND RESULTS

We had 4 of our teams without a game over the weekend and we had another 14 of our teams that failed to score any goals. We had another disappointing weekend for goals as the average score went down from four goals last weekend, to just 3 goals this weekend. The highest score that we had came from the Championship where SOUTHAMPTON won 4-0 at home to Blackburn Rovers and they have now taken their goals tally up to 38 goals and have now scored in all of their last 15 league/cup games.

Southampton became our 32nd voted team in our second season of 1984/85. In their first season they finished with a total of 71 goals. We had to wait for the 2011/12 Season for them to finish with their highest score of 99 goals. The last time that we had Southampton was back in the 2016/17 Season where they finished with a total of 53 goals. This season they have a total of 6 votes and they have picked up just 2 blank score sheets. Over the years they have netted a total of 1032 goals which gives them an average score of 68 goals per season to date. 

PREMIER LEAGUE

ARSENAL have moved back up to the top after they won 2-0 at home to BRIGHTON and are on a total of 37 goals. Brighton picked up their second blank of the season after a goal run of 10 league/cup games. LIVERPOOL drop to second place after they drew 0-0 at home to MANCHESTER UNITED. Liverpool picked up their first blank score sheet after a run of 18 league/cup games. United picked up their seventh blank score sheet of the season and now two in a row. ASTON VILLA are in third place after they won 2-1 away to Brentford. Villa are on a total of 38 goals and have now scored in all of their last 6 league/cup games. WEST HAM won 3-0 at home to Wolves and have taken their goals total to 33. CHELSEA won 2-0 to the bottom of the table Sheffield United and they are on a total of 33 goals. MANCHESTER CITY drew 2-2 at home to CRYSTAL PALACE and are on a total of 40 goals while Palace are on 21. NEWCASTLE won 3-0 at home to FULHAM and have taken their goals total to 40 while Fulham picked up their sixth blank of the season. 

CHAMPIONSHIP

Leicester City are still top here even though they had no game over the weekend. IPSWICH TOWN are still in second place after they drew 2-2 at home to rivals NORWICH. Ipswich are on a total of 55 goals while Norwich are on a total of 42 goals. BRISTOL CITY won 1-0 at home to SUNDERLAND and are on a total of 28 goals while Sunderland picked up their seventh blank of the season. LEEDS UNITED drew 1-1 at home to Coventry and are on a total of 40 goals. PLYMOUTH won 3-2 at home to Rotherham and have taken their goals tally to 38 goals after they had failed to score in their previous two games. SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY won 2-1 at home to QPR and are on a total of 18 goals and have now scored in all of their last 6 league/cup games. SWANSEA lost 2-1 at home to MIDDLESBROUGH and are on a total of 35 goals and have now scored in all of their last 6 league/cup games. Brough are on a total of 45 goals. STOKE CITY drew 1-1 away to West Brom and that is their 29th goal of the season.

LEAGUE ONE

The highest team that we have here are PETERBOROUGH in second place after they won 1-0 away to Fleetwood Town. Borough are now on a total of 53 goals and have scored in all of their last 22 league/cup games. BARNSLEY drew 1-1 at home against CHARLTON and they are on 46 goals while Charlton hit goal number 41. BRISTOL ROVERS won 2-1 away to Bolton and are on a total of 38 goals and have now scored in all of their last 13 games. BLACKPOOL lost 2-1 away to Cheltenham and are on a total of 41 goals. DERBY drew 1-1 at home to Wycombe and are now on a total of 38 goals and have scored in all of their last 10 league/cup games. READING drew 1-1 away to Lincoln City and are on a total of 35 goals and have now scored in all of their last 11 league/cup games.   

LEAGUE TWO

WREXHAM are in third place after they won 2-1 at home to Colchester. Wrexham are on a total of 46 goals. NOTTS COUNTY lost 3-1 away to Harrogate and are on a total of 49 goals and have now scored in all of their last 6 league/cup games. MK DONS won 2-0 at home to Forest Green and are on a total of 35 goals. SALFORD CITY drew 0-0 at home to  AFC WIMBLEDON and picked up their seventh blank and now two games in a row without a goal. Wimbledon picked up their sixth blank of the season. SUTTON UNITED lost 8-0 away to top of the table Stockport County and that is their sixth blank of the season after a goal run of 11 league/cup games. 

SCOTTISH RESULTS

In the Scottish League Cup Final RANGERS have won the cup against ABERDEEN with a very late goal in the 76th minute. Rangers are on a total of 43 goals and have extended their goal run to 15 league/cup games. Aberdeen picked up their ninth blank of the season. 

In the Premiership top of the table CELTIC have lost their second league game 2-0 at home to Hearts. Celtic have now picked up a total of four blank score sheet after a goal run of 7 league/cup games. Rangers are in second place and now have two games in hand of Celtic. KILMARNOCK drew 0-0 away to bottom of the table Livingston and that is their sixth blank of the season. HIBERNIAN lost 1-0 away to St Johnston and picked up their fifth blank of the season after a goal run of 6 league/cup games. ROSS COUNTY lost 1-0 at home to Dundee and that is now their ninth blank of the season and now two in a row. 

In League One FALKIRK are back at the top of the table after they won 3-1 away to second place Hamilton. Falkirk are now on a total of 47 goals. COVE RANGERS lost 2-1 at home to Alloa and are now on a total of 38 goals and they have now scored in all of their last 12 league/cup games. KELTY HEARTS lost 1-0 at home to Montrose and that is their fourth blank of the season. 

In League Two STENHOUSEMUIR are still top of the table after they won 2-1 at home to  EAST FIFE. Stenhousemuir are on a total of 32 goals and have now scored in all of their last 7 games. Fife picked up goal number 25. CLYDE who are bottom of the table lost 2-1 away to Peterhead and are on a total of 22 goals.

Our WORST three teams are

Our Best performing team are still PETERBOROUGH after they have now scored in all of their 22 league/cup games. They have a total of 53 goals which gives them an average score of 1.9 goals per game. 

Our worst performing team is STOKE CITY this week as they have picked up 11 blank score sheets out of their 25 league/cup games. 

Our highest goal scoring team in our 41st Season are NEWCASTLE UNITED after they won 8-0 away to Sheffield United in Week Eight. BARNSLEY and BRISTOL ROVERS have both pick up our second highest score with 7 goals. Barnsley won 7-0 at home to Port Vale in the first league game of the season in Week One. Bristol Rovers won 7-2 at home to non-league Whitby Town in the first round of the FA CUP in Week Fourteen. 

SCOTT THOMSON (2) celebrates his 4th weekend at number one. Scott picked up a total of just 3 goals this week from his second selection of Celtic, Peterborough, Wrexham. James Somerville remains in second place this week on goal difference with Scott, as he picked up a total of just 4 goals from the week. James teams are Celtic, Leicester City and Peterborough.

At the other end at 110 we now have CHARLIE FARLEY (John Wood) for his first weekend and become the 10th player to do so. John picked up just 2 goals from the weekend. John has Kilmarnock, Ross County and Stenhousemuir.

We did not have a great week for goals but with the busy Christmas period coming up we are all hoping for a festive treat.
