France and Uruguay in Quarter-Finals

In the first games of the last sixteen or Round Two of the World Cup, FRANCE winners of Group C with 22 votes played ARGENTINA, runner-up winners of Group D with 24 votes. The first half was all about France as they attacked the Argentina’s goals and even hit the crossbar just after 9 minutes of play. They then had a penalty in the 13^th minute and Griezmenn scored France first goal. Argentina had just one attacked and they scored through Di Maria just before half time in the 41^st minute. Half time the scored remained 1-1. In the second half the game was set at such a fast pace and Argentina went ahead with a fantastic goal from Mercado in the 48^th minute. France did not let up on the pressure and they equalised in the 57^th minute by Pavard. With end to end football, France scored two very quick goals from their youngest player Mboppé in the 64^th and 68^th minute making it 4-2 to France. Argentina fought back and scored their third goal in the 93^rd minute and in added on time from Agüero. Final score finished 4-3 to France. This must be the very best game of the World Cup to date. France is our first team to go into the quarter-finals and they are now on a total of 7 goals. Argentina go home with 6 goals which is their lowest score since the 2002 Korea and Japan where they finished with just 2 goals. Their highest score was in the 2006 German World Cup with 11 goals. In Brazil 2014 they finished on a total of 8 goals and lost in the final to Germany. They last won the World Cup in Mexico 1986.

In the other game of the day, URUGUAY winners of Group A with 7 votes had won all of their opening games played PORTUGAL runner-up winners of Group B with 5 votes. The game started off on even terms but Uruguay made the game more interesting after 7 minutes with a goal from Cavani and it remained 1-0 to Uruguay at half time. The second half was still evenly matched but Pepe of Portugal scored in the 55^th minute to make it 1-1. It was Uruguay’s first goal scored against them so far in the competition. Not long after the Portugal’s equaliser, Cavani scored his second of the game to put Uruguay in the lead. Ronaldo was getting a bit frustrated by this time as he did not have many shots at goal all night. Portugal laid Uruguay’s goal under siege but the shots went off target. The final score was 2-1 to Uruguay and the goals take their goals tally up to 7 goals. They will play France in the quarter-finals on 6^th July. Portugal are out and they finished on a total of 6 goals which is a lot better than 4 goals in Brazil 2014 where they finished third in their group and did not make the last sixteen. Their best score is 7 goals and they first finished on that in 2002 Korea and japan and then in the 2010 South Africa. Portugal have never won the World Cup.

So who are the best teams that we have in the 2018 World Cup after the first round group games have been played. I can tell you that they are.

BELGIUM (9) ENGLAND (8) RUSSIA (8) SPAIN (6) total of 31 goals.

All but eight of our teams have scored in the first round, third games and they have collected a total of 16 goals. This is the lowest score that we have since we started the World Cup in Italia 1990. In that tournament we picked up a total of 19 goals from the fifteen nations that we had in our very first World Cup. The eight teams that have not scored in their third game are AUSTRALIA, DENMARK, ENGLAND, FRANCE, GERMANY, MEXICO, RUSSIA and SENEGAL.

In the last Golden Goals World Cup we reached a total of 92 goals from the first round, In Russia our teams have scored a total of 16 goals in the third set of games and a total of 76 goals over the tournament to date. 

ENGLAND holds the current record for the highest score with that 6-1 win over Panama in Group G in their second game of the group stage.

COSTA RICA from Group E and GERMANY from Group F are our worst team as they have failed to score in two of their three opening games.

Top Goal Scorers in Russia 2018 are Harry Kane of England with 5 goals. Lukaku of Belgium and Ronaldo of Portugal come next with 4 goals each. All are still in the tournament.

We had four players that picked up the most amount of goals in the last of the first round games. They were Mike Harrington, Tony King, Nolan Taylor and Jamie Wood. They all picked up a total of 7 goals from their combinations.

Day Fifteen

Here are the final results of the last games in the first round of the World Cup 2018. In Day fifteen of the tournament in Group G, top of the group ENGLAND had to play second place BELGIUM in their third and final game of Round One and changed eight of the team from the last game against Panama. It seemed that both teams wanted to win this group but the game went to Belgium after they scored the only goal in their 1-0 win by Januzaj in the 51^st minute. Belgium have won all of their three games and they are now our top scorers with 9 goals. England remain on 8 goals with two wins. Panama took the lead against Tunisia in the first half but with two goals in the second half, Tunisia won 2-1. The group has finished as Belgium top with max 9 points with England second with 6 points both join the last sixteen. Tunisia are third with 3 points and Panama go home with no points.

In Group H, it was all to play for as any one of these teams could of gone through to Round Two. POLAND had to play Japan in their third game but they had lost their first two opening games. Japan had won one and drawn the other. But the game went to Poland 1-0 with the goal being scored in the 59^th minute, but they go out of the tournament. Poland finished on a total of 2 goals. In the other game, SENEGAL lost 1-0 to COLUMBIA with the goal coming in the 74^th minute. Senegal go home with 4 goals while Columbia are on 5 goals and they will be one of the last sixteen. The Group finished as Columbia top with 6 points with Japan in second place with 4 points. Although Senegal also finished on 4 points, Japan go through as they had less yellow cards. Poland finished last with 3 points.

We now know that we will have 12 of our eighteen nations in the last sixteen round two, knock out stage. We also now know that Australia, Costa Rica, Egypt, Germany, Poland and Senegal are out of the tournament for us.

Our teams scored a total of 16 goals in the third set of games and a total of 76 goals over the tournament to date.  This is the lowest score that we have since we started the World Cup Italia in 1990. In that tournament we picked up a total of 19 goals from the fifteen nations that we had in our very first World Cup.

Belgium are our best team with a total of 9 goals and have scored in all three games in the first round.

Day Fourteen

It’s Day fourteen of the World Cup 2018 and we have had the biggest upset yet as World Champions GERMANY in Group F are out of the tournament as they lost their third and final game 2-0 to South Korea. Germany needed a win to stay in the competition but that was not to be. South Korea scored their two goals very late in the game in added on time. This is the first time since 1938 that Germany have failed to win a place in the last 16 second round. Germany have the highest votes this World Cup with 36 votes and they have only scored two goals in the three games in the first round. This is their lowest score on record. Meanwhile in the other game in this group, another shock is that Sweden have beaten MEXICO in their last game 3-0. Mexico had won their first two opening games but failed to beat Sweden. Sweden’s goals all came in the second half of the game. The group has finished with Sweden top and Mexico second both with 6 points while South Korea and bottom of the group Germany finished on 3 points each.

In Group E BRAZIL won their last game 2-0 against Serbia and that has taken their goals tally to five. Brazil scored in each half. Brazil have won two of their three games with the other game being a draw. In the other game, Switzerland drew 2-2 with bottom of the group COSTA RICA. Switzerland went a goal up in the first half with Costa Rica came fighting back to draw 2-2 with a late goal in added time. Costa Rica had lost both their opening games and are going home with a total of 2 goals. The group has finished with Brazil first with 7 points, Switzerland second with 5 points. Serbia came next with three points and Costa Rica last with 1 point.

What a day we had seeing two of our teams going out after round one in which one is last World Cup Champions Germany. Costa Rica are in their first Golden Goals World Cup and they nearly did better than the then Champions. The tournament seems to be wide open. Who can win this World Cup for 2018. England play Belgium tonight in group G. “Come on ENGLAND”

Day Thirteen

Our teams are playing their third and final game in the first round of the World Cup 2018. In Day Thirteen of the tournament in Group C, It has taken a total of 38 games before we saw our very first 0-0 draw and that went to the two top teams in this group DENMARK and FRANCE. Denmark have won one game and drawn two in this first round while France have won their first two games and drawn the third. In the other game Peru beat AUSTRALIA 2-0 to pick up their first points and their first goals of the tournament. Australia have lost two games and drew one. But they are both out of the World Cup. We now have two more of our teams are through to Round two. France finished top with 7 points while Denmark in second place end up with 5 points. Peru finished next with 3 points and last in the group, Australia with just 1 point.

In Group D, ARGENTINA needed to win their last game in this round against Nigeria and they just about did it with a late goal to win 2-1. Argentina have struggled through this stage of the World Cup as this is their first win of the tournament. They drew the first game and lost the second. Argentina are now on a total of 3 goals. In the other game Croatia won 2-1 against Iceland to win all three games. The group finished with Croatia first on maximum 9 points, Argentina second with 4 points and Nigeria third with 3 points. Iceland have finished last with 1 point.

We now know that we will have seven of our eighteen nations in the last sixteen round two, knock out stage. We also now know that Australia and Egypt are out of the tournament for us.

Day Twelve

Our teams are playing their third and final game in the first round of the World Cup 2018. In Day Twelve of the tournament we are going to find out who is in and who is out.

In Group A, RUSSIA had to play their final game against second place URUGUAY. Russia had done well in their first two games in this round but they finally played against a much better team than their last two games. Uruguay have also won their two opening games and they also won their third 3-0. Uruguay have taken their goals total to 5 goals while Russia picked up their first blank score sheet.In the other game, EGYPT played Saudi Arabia in their last game with them only picking up one goal against Russia in their 3-1 defeat. Although Egypt scored first the Saudi’s came back with a late goal in the first half and their last one in added time.

In Group A, Uruguay have won all of their games and get maximum points with 9. In second place is Russia with 6 points. Saudi Arabia finished in third place with 3 points while Egypt finished last with no points.

In Group B, PORTUGAL played third place Iran and drew their last game 1-1 with a late VAR penalty in added time. Portugal are now on a total of 5 goals. In the other game, SPAIN had to play Morocco. After they drew with Portugal and then beat Iran in their second game, playing the bottom of the group Morocco it should have been a walk over but the tables were turned. Although Spain drew 2-2 with them, Morocco went a goal up twice and they could have had more and might of even won this game. Spain although they passed the ball around very well, they lacked the finishing power. Spain are now on a total of 6 goals and like Portugal they are both in round two.

Group B have finished as Spain top with 5 points with Portugal in second place also with 5 points. In third placed finished Iran with 4 points, while Morocco came last with a single point.

We now know that we will have four of our eighteen nations in the last sixteen round two, knock out stage. We also now know that Egypt are our first nation out of the tournament.

After twelve days of play, our teams are starting to play their third game of the tournament, another one of our nations have picked up a blank score sheet. We stand at a total of 7 goals for the third set of games and a total of 67 goals over the tournament to date.  England, Belgium and Russia all have a total of 8 goals each after just two games played.

Day Eleven

Day Eleven of the tournament and in Group G ENGLAND won their first game against Tunisia and needed another win to keep up with Belgium in their group. England took on Panama in their second game and broke all records as they were 5-0 up at half-time and finished the game winning 6-1. As England go top of the group and with the biggest score so far in this World Cup, England have taken their goals tally up to 8 goals in which the English captain Harry Kane, scored a hat-trick and is now top scorer for Russia 2018 with five goals. In Brazil 2014 England never made the second round and the last time that England had a big score in the World Cup was back in the 1966 World Cup Final. In the group table, England are top with Belgium, Tunisia and Panama are going home.

In Group H, SENEGAL had won their first game against Poland and their next game was against Japan who had also won their first game. Senegal went a goal ahead twice but drew 2-2 with Japan at the final whistle. Senegal have doubled their goals score to 4 goals. In the other game POLAND faced COLUMBIA after they lost their first game to Senegal. Columbia lost their first game to Japan. Columbia came out on top with a 3-0 win against Poland. Columbia are now on a total of 4 goals while Poland are going home with one goal to date.

In this group Japan are top with Senegal second both on 4 points. Columbia are in third place with 3 points.

Day Ten

Day Ten of the tournament and in In Group F MEXICO have won their second game of the tournament as they win 2-1 against South Korea. After beating Champions Germany in their first game, Mexico are now on 6 points and a total of 3 goals and they are through to the next round. GERMANY lost their opening game against Mexico which was a disaster for them. Their next game was against second place Sweden who beat South Korea in their opening game. Germany needed to win this game or they could be going home very early. After Germany dominating the first 30 minutes of the first half, Sweden scored a goal from one of their few attacks in the German’s half of the pitch in the 32^nd minute by Toivonen and the score remained 1-0 to Sweden at half time. In the second half after a few changes in their team, Germany scored their first goal of the World Cup by Reus on 48 minutes. Germany went down to ten men but they did win their game 2-1 with a very late goal in added time by Kroos. It is a relief to all of the 36 players that have Germany in their choice of teams, but it’s not over yet as they must win against South Korea in their last game and Mexico to draw 0-0 with Sweden to go through to round two. Germany have a total of 2 goals now and three points to move into second place with Sweden behind leaders Mexico.

In Group G we have been waiting for a high score since Russia’s opening game. Well BELGIUM have equalised that by winning 5-2 against Tunisia in their second game on day ten. Belgium went 3-1 up before half time. The other goals came in the second half with each scoring late goals. Belgium are also on a goals total of 8 goals and top of the group and through to the next round.

After ten days of play, our teams have near all played their second game of the tournament, two of our nations have picked up one blank score sheet. We stand at a total of 21 goals for the second set of games and a total of 49 goals to date.  Belgium now join Russia with a total of 8 goals each.

Day Nine

Day Nine of the tournament and in Group D Nigeria won 2-0 against Iceland both goals scored in the second half. In the Group Tables, Croatia are top with 6 points, in second place is Nigeria with 3 points, Iceland have 1 point and Argentina also on 1 point.

In Group E after their draw with Switzerland, BRAZIL took on COSTA RICA in their second game and won  2-0 with the two goals coming in added time.  Brazil are now on 3 goals while Costa Rica have failed to score in the World Cup to date. In the other game Serbia won their first game but then lost 2-1 against Switzerland in their second game. In the group table, Brazil are top with 4 points with Switzerland in second place also with 4 points. Serbia are third on 3 points with Costa Rica failing to pick up any points from their two games.

After nine days of play, our teams have near all played their second game of the tournament, two of our nations have picked up one blank score sheet. We stand at a total of 12 goals for the second set of games and a total of 40 goals to date.  Russia are still in the lead with 8 goals.

Day Eight

Day Eight of the tournament and in Group C, DENMARK had won their first game against Peru but then had to face AUSTRALIA for their second game. The Denmark scored first in the 7^th minute of the first half with a fantastic goal by Eriksen but Australia came back with a penalty through the new technology VAR (hand ball) in the 38^th minute and scored by Jedinak, 1-1 at half-time. In an entertaining game, both teams needed the win to stay in the tournament but the game ended 1-1. It was the fourth drawn game of the World Cup. In the Other game FRANCE had beaten Australia in their first game and then took on Peru in their second. Again the big question is on the performance of the French team. Once again they had very few attacks on their opponents defence but I must say that Peru did put up a good fight in this game. France won by just one goal which came in the 34^th minutes scored by the youngest player in the French team Mbappé.  France have managed to win both games now, but It makes you wonder that If they do go through to the next round, and another three points makes them look favourite to do so, What will they play like when they meet a much stronger team. In the group table France are top with six point s and Denmark are second with four. Australia are third with that single point.

In Group D, ARGENTINA faced Croatia in their second game after they drew 1-1 against Iceland in their first game. But they found this game even tougher than the Iceland game. Argentina lost 3-0 to Croatia with all the goals coming in the second half. Croatia are top with six points with Iceland in second place with one. Argentina are also on one point and need to win their last game against Nigeria to go onto the next round.

Day Seven

Day Seven of the tournament and we will start to see teams that are going into round two and teams that are already going home.

In Group A, URUGUAY will be joining Russia in Round Two after they win just 1-0 against Saudi Arabia. Uruguay won their first game against Egypt also 1-0 and they are now in second place after Russia and they are now on a total of 2 goals. Egypt are out first nation to go home even though they have one more game to play against Saudi Arabia. They have scored just one goal.

In Group B, PORTUGAL drew their first game against Spain and they are could be through to the next round after they beat Morocco 1-0 in their second game. Portugal have taken their goals tally up to 4 goals. SPAIN could be joining them as they win 1-0 against Iran. Spain are also on 4 goals. Both Portugal and Spain finished on four goals each in Brazil 2014.

After seven days of play, our teams are now playing their second game of the tournament. three of our nations have picked up one blank score sheet. We stand at a total of 7 goals for the second set of games and a total of 35 goals to date.

We have ended up with a total of 48 people taking part in our eighth World Cup tournament. Out of the 32 nations taking part, we have only eighteen nations which have been voted for.

All but three of our teams have scored in the first round and they have collected a total of 28 goals. In the last Golden Goals World Cup we reached a total of 37 goals from the first round. The three teams that have not scored are COSTA RICA, EGYPT and GERMANY.

RUSSIA holds the current record for the highest score with that 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia in Group A in their opening game.

As you can see, that Tony Jenkins has picked up the highest score after the first round opening games with the winning combination so far with Belgium, Brazil, Russia and Spain.

Day Six

In Day Six of the tournament and another three of our teams were in action.

In Group H Japan beat ten men COLUMBIA after they gave away a penalty in the 3^rd minute of play in the first half. Columbia came back to draw 1-1 by half time. In the second half Japan scored again 2-1. Columbia have five votes and they are in their fourth World Cup with us. They scored 12 goals in Brazil 2014. The luckiest team of the tournament must be SENEGAL. They received a home goal in the first half against POLAND and in the second half they were gifted with a goal by the Polish goalkeeper. Poland found this was a very hard game to play but they did score a goal from a corner but lost 2-1 in their first game. Both Poland and Senegal are in their first World Cup with us. Senegal have just one vote while Poland have two.  Top of the group are Japan and Poland with three points each.

In Group A, RUSSIA have started the second round of games in the group stages. Their second game was against EGYPT and after their big 5-0 win against Saudi Arabia, how would they do. Well it could of been any one of the two teams that could take the lead as they both had plenty of chances but it was still 0-0 at half time. Russia had quite a difficult time in trying to break down the Egyptians defence, but they finally did, winning 3-1 with the Egyptians getting a penalty and their first goal of the tournament late in the game.  Russia could be the first team to go into the next round while Egypt go out as they also lost their first game to Uruguay. Russia have taken their goals tally up to 8 goals which is the best they have done since they scored eight goals in Italian 1990.

Day Five

In Day Five of the tournament and another two of our teams were in action.

In Group F, Sweden won their opening game 1-0 against South Korea to put them joint top with Mexico in this group.

In Group G, BELGIUM won 3-0 against Panama with all three goals coming in the second half. Panama are in their very first World Cup tournament. Belgium have a total of 17 votes and this is their fifth World Cup with Golden Goals. The highest number of goals that they have scored is six goals and the last time they did that was in Brazil 2014. In the other group game, ENGLAND won 2-1 against Tunisia. This is the first time that England have scored more than one goal in their opening game. In France 1998 England beat Tunisia 2-0.

England could have been a couple of goals up on Tunisia in the first ten minutes of the first half. But it was England’s youngest World Cup captain Harry Kane from Tottenham FC that put England into the lead with a simple tap-in after 11 minutes. Twenty-four minutes after that, England gave away a penalty and Tunisia scored 1-1 at half-time. In the second half the pace of the game had slowed down but England kept Tunisia in their own half for most of the second half. It was not till the end of 90 minutes with added on time that Harry Kane once again, scored the winning goal. What a great start for us English fans. England have 8 votes and this is their seventh appearance with us. The best that England have scored with us is eight goals in Italy 1990. In Brazil they picked up just two goals.

So in Group G Belgium are top with England in second place.

Day Four

In Day Four of the tournament, we had four of our teams in action. In Group E COSTA RICA lost 1-0 to Serbia. Costa Rica are in their first Golden Goals World Cup and they have only one vote. Also our second highest voted nation of 29, is BRAZIL. They scored in the first 20 minutes of the first half against Switzerland but they came back in the second half to draw 1-1 with the Champions.  Not what we expected from Brazil. Brazil have been in all of our eight World Cups and they last won the cup in 2002. That is the year that they scored their highest amount of goals in a tournament with 18 goals. They have scored a total of 77 goals in the last seven World Cups.

In Group F, GERMANY played their first game against MEXICO. We have not had an upset in the World Cup until this game. Mexico won 1-0 with the goal coming in the 35^th minute of the first half.  Last World Cup winners, Germany are in their 8^th World Cup with us and that is also where they scored their highest amount with 18. They have picked up the most number of votes in Russia with 36. Mexico are in their 6^th World Cup and they scored a total of five goals in Brazil 2014.

So after the fourth days play, thirteen of our eighteen nations have now played and now three have picked up a blank score sheet. We stand at a total of 19 goals to date.  

Day Three

In Day Three we had another four of our teams in action.

In Group C FRANCE beat AUSTRALIA 2-1 in their first game. Although the French had a couple of chances to take the early lead, it was Australia that kept the pressure on them in the first half. In the second half not much had changed in only the the pace of the game had slowed down. France was awarded a penalty in the 58^th minute and history was made with the World Cup's first VAR goal. The VAR (video assistant referee) penalised Australia's Risdon for a sliding challenge on Griezmann. Griezmann scored from the spot to score the first World Cup goal influenced by VAR. But Australia came back and scored four minutes later with another penalty of the game. The penalty was scored by Jedinak making it 1-1. France scored the winning goal in the 80^th minute from Pogba. France are in their 6^th World Cup with Golden Goals and they have a total of 22 votes. The highest number of goals that France have scored in an tournament, was back in the 1998 with 15 goals. They picked up 10 goals in Brazil 2014. Australia are new to Golden Goals and they have just one vote. In the other game, DENMARK won their first game as they win 1-0 against Peru. Peru could of gone a goal up before half time as they were awarded a penalty but they failed to score. Denmark scored their goal in the 59^th minute by Poulsen. Denmark are in their 3^rd World Cup with us and their highest score is 9 goals in 1998. They have just one vote.

In the table for Group C France are top with Denmark in second place.

In Group D ARGENTINA are the only nation that we have in this group and they drew 1-1 against a very determined Iceland in their first game. The first half was end to end football and it was the Argentina that scored first in the 19^th minute from Agüero but Iceland came back a few minutes later with a goal from Finnbogason. In the second half, Argentina had a penalty taken by Messi but a great save from the Iceland goalkeeper denied Argentina of their win. The games are now getting better with the big nations now playing although Iceland are the smallest nation to qualify for a World Cup finals. It was another great game to watch.Argentina are in their 8^th Golden Goals World Cup and their best was in the 2006 with 11 goals. In Brazil 2014 they scored a total of 8 goals. They have a total of 24 votes. In the other game for this group, Croatia won 2-0 against Nigeria.

In the table for Group D Croatia are top with the three points with Argentina in second place.

So after the third days play, nine of our eighteen nations have now played and only one has picked up a blank score sheet. We stand at a total of 17 goals to date.
