Week One

Well here we are with our 35th Season of Golden Goals and a very big welcome to you all and what a season we are going to have.

As you can see that we have ended up with 149 entries into this seasons competition and I would like to thank everyone who has  helped us to get to that magic figure which is a New Golden Goals Record after beating our previous record of 136 from last Season. Although we have seen some names missing from last season, we have gained another twenty-seven new ones. So who is going to be our 35th Champion? We will find out in the next forty-two weeks time but I wish you all the very best of luck.

So how did the voting of teams for this season finally end up. Well CELTIC have picked up the biggest number of votes as they came in with a total of 113. Last season they had a total of 69 and scored a total of 134 goals which is their very best with Golden Goals. So this was no surprise that they would be the most voted teams this season.
Staying with the Scottish teams the second highest voted team comes from the Scottish Premiership again and they are RANGERS with just 9 votes which is a lot lower than last seasons of 31.
The Scottish teams did well again this season with eight teams being picked. We have just three from the Scottish Premiership, one from the Championship and League One with three from the League Two..
With the English teams things have changed as they always do in this competition. We have a total of  thirteen  Premiership teams in this years competition with MANCHESTER CITY becoming our top team again this season with just 40 votes, ten less than last season. Next comes ARSENAL with 30 votes. They were our fourth most voted team last season with 16.
In third place with 27 votes  is CHELSEA. They were our fifth most voted team last season with just 15 votes. I was expecting them to pick up more votes as they scored a total of 109 goals last season. In fourth place down from three last season is MANCHESTER UNITED. They have 23 votes compared to 26 last season. Our fifth team is TOTTENHAM with just 22 votes. They were our eighth most voted team last season with 14 votes but they netted a total of 109 goals.
In the Championship we have picked up 17 teams compared to 12 last season,  while in League one we have 12 with 8 teams picked once again from League two.

Week One in our very first weekend of the new season we are already starting to pay out the prize money, but here is my first error of the season. Although we had five winners, two of them have the same combination which is all my fault as I did not put one players name on my team sheets. So not to do anyone out of money  I have split the £6 winnings as if four have won. Our five winners will pick up £1. 50 pence each.
So this weekend we have produced our very first weekend winners, and that means that the first £6 weekend prize money will go to GARY BROWN, PAUL DAVEY,  PATRICK O’DONOGHUE with JAMES SOMERVILLE and JED WEARDEN all picked up this weekends highest score of  12 goals from just two of their teams.
Gary and Patrick are in their very first season with Golden Goals just two of our twenty-seven new players this season. We wish them all the best. Paul is our 2013/14 champion and has been with the competition for a while now. James and Jed have also been with us for a few season’s now. But here are their combinations

Gary  CELTIC 4, LUTON 8, TOTTENHAM –
Paul  CELTIC 4, LUTON 8, MANCHESTER CITY –
Patrick/James  ARSENAL – CELTIC 4, LUTON 8
Jed  CELTIC 4, LUTON 8, MAN CHESTER UNITED -

Out of our 58 teams that have been picked this season, fourteen had no game and another seven teams that failed to score any goals in their first game. So lets have a quick run down on this weekends results starting with the English Championship.

CHAMPIONSHIP
ASTON VILLA drew 1-1 at home to Hull while CARDIFF beat BURTON ALBION 1-0 away. FULHAM drew 1-1 at home to NORWICH. IPSWICH won 1-0 at home to BIRMINGHAM. QUEENS PARK RANGERS are in second place as they win 2-0 at home to READING who are now at the foot of the table. SHEFFIELD UNITED won 1-0 at home to BRENTFORD while WOLVES win 1-0 at home to MIDDLESBROUGH. LEEDS UTD are in their place after they won 3-2 away to BOLTON.

LEAGUE ONE
FLEETWOOD TOWN have won their first league game to place them top of the league by winning 2-0 at home to Rotherham.PORTSMOUTH are in third place as they also win 2-0 at home to Rochdale. BRADFORD won 2-1 at home to Blackpool while CHARLTON won 1-0 at home to Bristol Rovers. DONCASTER picked up their first blank of the season as they drew 0-0 at home to Gillingham. MK DONS lost 1-0 at home to WIGAN and SCUNTHORPE drew 1-1 at home to AFC Wimbledon. PETERBOROUGH won 2-1 at home to PLYMOUTH. SOUTHEND beat BLACBURN 2-1 at home.

LEAGUE TWO
LUTON are our highest scoring team in week one as they win 8-2 at home to Yeovil. Luton have a total of five votes this season. COLCHESTER lost 3-1 away to Accrington while COVENTRY won 3-0 at home against Notts County. PORT VALE won 3-1 away to Crawley and MANSFIELD drew 2-2 away to Crewe. EXETER won 1-0 at home to Cambridge and FOREST GREEN in their first football league game drew 2-2 at home to Barnet. LINCOLN CITY back into professional football drew 2-2 away to Wycombe.

SCOTTISH LEAGUES
Now you might know that the Scottish have already played their first round of the League Cup and with the new group format once again, so most of our teams have already played more than four games this weekend. But here is the results of the first league games.
In the Scottish Premiership, we have just three teams this season which is a surprise as CELTIC go straight on top as they win 4-1 at home to Hearts while rivals RANGERS won 2-1 away to Motherwell to go in third place. ABERDEEN won 2-0 at home to Hamilton and are in third place.
In the Championship we have just one team and they are FALKIRK. They have started the season well by winning all their group cup games but lost their first league game 3-1 away to St Mirren. Falkirk are on a total of 14 goals scoring in all five games played. In League One, RAITH ROVERS picked up their 10th goal of the season as they drew 1-1 away to Alloa. In League Two we have three teams this season. they are PETERHEAD who won 2-1 away to Annan and with their 100% scoring record after five games are now on a total of 9 goals. STENHOUSEMUIR lost 3-2 at home against Stirling but they are now on a total of 5 goals. The new boys to the Scottish League ELGIN CITY drew their first game 1-1 at home to Cowdenbeath and that takes them up to three goals.

As you can see that most of us have picked some goals in our first week of football except the ones with English premiership teams, but AMANDA MORRISON is out in front by a single goal with her combination of Falkirk, Manchester City and Scunthorpe.

Here are our top ten in the first week.
